lovelee1:  I’m sorry to hear… I know when you have your heart and mind set on something it’s hard to have the story change, especially at the last minute. Is there no manager or anyone else you can speak with to be 100% sure there is nothing they can do?

If there is no minimum charge in the contract, they cannot hold you to paying a minimum.  Is there a separate catering contract? Throwing it in there is definitely shady – in the long run you’re probably better off not working with such people. But if you really love the venue, you could push back about it not being in the contract.

Im sorry to hear that. I am going through something similar right now with my venue.  The unfortunate thing is, I dont have the money to put down on another deposit,  so I may have to cut my wedding party and get married in my parents’ backyard.

Same here. I have a meeting scheduled with the director of sales tomorrow night to see how they can compensate me. If not im getting whatever my deposit is less the penalty and taking my business elsewhere

Did they actually present you with the catering contract though? In the venue rental contract does it make reference to any clauses, appendix or subcontracts in which pertain to catering or said catering requirement? If not it seems as though they tried to sneakily pass it off as a packaged deal combo when in actuality it may not be. Either way, that isnt the trait of someone/somewhere you need to or should do business with. I am very sorry to hear about the let down though. I hope something works out for you.

lovelee1:  I definitely wouldn’t want to do business with people who pull shadiness like that. You’d never feel 100% comfortable!

Maybe you can put out a call for venues in whatever area you’re looking in? People have amazing ideas and out-of-the-box suggestions; you might find something you never even thought of!

ETA: by “call” I mean start a thread.

To be fair, at least you were told before you handed over your deposit. This way, although you are disappointed, you havent also quite a bit of money in other planning aspects that need venue info e.g. invites or worse, have to foot a much larger than expected bill after your wedding day!
