I was hoping you guys could help me.. I have been going back and forth for the past two months between four venues. I can’t decide between Hotel Sorella, Hotel Derek, Petroleum club & lakeside country club… I would love to hear opinions of what you all think! They are about the same in price, maybe $1k-$2k difference.
Hotel Sorella- I love the decor, only problem is I feel it may be a little tight. My guest count is 200 and they said it would fit up to 230 but I’m afraid there won’t be much room to move around. Also they a fairly new and have not had any weddings held there, there first wedding is in April so I’m unsure of how service would be being that they are rookies
Lakeside Country club – I love the ballroom but the club itself is very old fashion! being that I’m going for the modern theme, not sure if the rest of the club fits my theme, even though the ballroom is reall nice! The rest of the area has grandpa fabric discolored furntire, and bright blue old carpet! =/
Hotel derek – The hotel is beautiful, but the ballroom didn’t wow me like hotel sorellas. It’s larger, but there aren’t any chandeliers, and I love chandeliers.
Petroleum club – love the view! It is located on the 43rd floor of an exxonmobil building in downtown and you oversea the entire Houston downtown skyline. My only concern with this is downtown parking is so bad. Also the gold curtains throw me off. My color theme is violet, black, white and silver.. so the gold curtains do not fit my colors.
Please let me know what you think!

Are you locked into your color scheme? I only ask because that last venue really wowed me. But I liked the one you called old fashioned as well.
We passed on a venue because they just didn’t seem as experienced with weddings. The site fee was cheaper and the view of the harbor was amazing, but Fiance just wasn’t comfortable with how together they were. And parking is a pretty big deal, too – are there no garages in that area?

Yeah we’re pretty set with the color scheme. We’re debating between violet/black/white/silver or babypink/white/silver. Either way we go, it doesn’t go well with the Petroleum Club (last pic). There aren’t any garages near by but we can opt to pay for our guests valet, but it’s just an extra expense we didn’t expect to pay…. but the view is absolutely gorgeous! =( decisions decisions..

Lakeside country club for sure.

I wouldn’t worry about Hotel Sorella being too tight–if your list is 200 and they can fit 230, you will be fine! I would worry, though, about the inexperience. Lakeside, I think the ballroom is predictable but still beautiful! I don’t think the outside area is a big deal, unless you are having cocktail hour in this area. If not, guests will walk through it, and might be apprehensive at first, but then they will be WOWed by how awesome you’ve made the ballroom look 😉
Hotel Derek to me is blah, reminds me of the ballrooms we do big conferences in for work. Petroleum club is very different, and definitely a great view! I don’t think you need to stress about the gold curtains. All of those rooms have some elements in them that don’t match your color scheme (the red carpets, for example). However, the gold might not be as bold in the photo as you see it in real life. Another option is lighting–if you do uplights in pink, for example, then those gold curtains are gonna look pink 🙂 However, I would pay for the valet if you really decide you want to do the reception here. I wouldn’t count on my guests finding parking in the city. They might be late, or have to walk far in heels, is it a safe area for that sort of thing to leave late at night, etc.

I would be concerned about the inexperience with Hotel Sorella too, as gorgeous as it is.
I really love the Lakeside Country Club. I’ve seen beautiful, old fashioned venues contrasting with super modern decor and they were really striking and gorgeous. Perhaps you could do that?

Thank you for all of your opinions! With your advise I think I’ve narrowed it down between Lakeside or Petroleum Club. I think Hotel Sorellas is too small and Hotel Dereks is too plain so I’m eliminating those.

If you could find it in your budget I would go with the petroleum Club. If not, I would go with Lakeside. They both look really pretty though. Either choice would be great looking.

- Wedding: March 2012 - Pelican Grand Beach Resort
1 is my favorite, but 4 is my next favorite. The other ones are pretty, but bland.

If your theme is modern then I would definitely go with the last option, what is more modern than city lights and a skyline? It sounds like you want black in your colours but you are more open to other colours. You might consider charcoal grey instead of silver, this way you would match well with the gold curtains.
Modern black and white (with some gold and grey accents)
modern black, grey and pink (with gold accents)
or you could really embrace the gold and do black and gold with bright green (or another bright colour) accents:
