palmtree5 :  It the minimum actually based on the number of people, or on estimated cost for that # of people?  If the latter, you can pay for upgrades in food or drink to reach the minimum payment.

Talk to the venue. They will probably be willing to let you pay for upgrades with the money for the 35 extra people. They care about money, not how many people are there.

The venue is entitled to know that they are going to make a certain amount of money. If you can’t meet their guest minimum, they usually have a minimum spend alternative.

They will sometimes let you upgrade menu, bar options, linen/chair options, etc. to help meet the minimum. My venue has this option.

it really depends on how much you love the venue and if you are willing to pay the fee despite meeting the minimum.

my DH and i had a small-ish wedding and did not meet the minumum number of guests but we loved our wedding venue so we just went for it :).

at the end of the day, like mentioned it’s either you just suck it up pay despite meeting the minimum, inviting more guests or just find another venue.

keep in mind, if you really like the venue it maybe best to just pay for the minimum without inviting more guests. by inviting more guests your cost will up because more invitations, wedding favours and etc.

hope that helps.

Our minimum spend before taxes and gratuities for food and beverages is $22,000. Can you ask them to convert the number of people to a minimum spend?
