You may need to go to more of a VFW, American Legion, Fire Hall, etc.  Unfortunately, most of the “typical” venues have preferred caterer lists that you have to use.  Community centers may also be a good option.

This is a relatively new venue in York: http://www.agapehealingcenter.com/weddings-and-events-york-pa/  — although it’s really only pretty inside….

One nice thing about going with a more low key venue is that you can pretty it up — we ended up going with a local golf club for our venue — the banquet room is a banquet room, but because the cost was 1/5th of what some of the “prettier” venues wanted, we have room in the budget to do the draping and uplighting, etc.

Good luck!

@hiroshymatetrastar:  hmm…you’ve got me stumped — and I researched venues all over Central PA before making a final decision last year…good luck!  Definitely let us know if you find one, because this topic comes up a lot on here and on theKnot…

We originally were looking at the Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, they have a preferred catering list of 10 caterers…however, the catering quotes we got were ridiculous and I wasn’t willing to compromise on my menu.

We ended up at Four Seasons Golf Course in Lancaster (we’re getting married in October) — they have five preferred caterers and the quotes we got were 1/2 the price of the Harrisburg caterers for the same menu.

We’re renting the whole venue — having our ceremony in the windows room which overlooks the golf course, and having the reception in the main banquet room. It’s not much to look at from the outside, but the windows room is gorgeous and we’re going to decorate the main banquet room with some draping, uplighting and lit up chinese lanterns hanging from the ceiling.
