@bonnienclyde:  I am not an attorney.  However, I believe that if you did not sign a contract, you should be able to contact the vendor to request that the venue NOT charge your card, and, if they do in the interim, to receive an offsetting credit. I would call immediately and attempt to speak with someone in addition to having sent your e-mail.

In some jurisdictions the verbal contract is worth the paper it’s written on but your deposit would create a presumption of it’s existance.

My suggestion is contact the venue & try to work it out amicably. Realistically, if you cancel your card you might still be liable but they won’t necessarily chase you for it (they’d have a burden of proof). Seriously though… call them!
