Hi there vietnamese bees,
I am a Vietnamese marrying an American. We are doing an afternoon vietnamese reception at my parents’.
Are there any rules regarding the Ao Dai of the bride (color, cut)?
I.e: My parents want me to have a collar and say it is “protocol”, which I don’t think there is, but I’d rather just have a round neckline (amongst other things).
Just need confirmation on whether there are rules or not. Please let me know!

Traditionally, brides wear red ao dai and a hat. Ao dai’s also traditionally have collars — there are many styles (round, scalloped, square, etc.). But, each ao dai is custom made in terms of design (including color, fabric, and other details) and fit so I feel it’s really up to the bride. I’m in the middle of this process too. Are you renting yours or getting it made?

heartillynne : Hi bee! I’m not sure if this is a “must-follow rule”, but my family has mentioned that the traditional color of the ao dai should be red with a train, and a matching khan dong or hat. They prefer the high collar as well but it’s not a requirement.
My own ao dai will be white with a white hat, and high collar.

Depends how traditional your family is. I opted for pink with boat neck and a gold khan dong… so not really at all haha

starlightx3 : I really love that! My mother and I had a power struggle over having a collar (I wanted boatneck) but it seemed really important to her.. so I let it go. I’ve felt so much since and haven’t thought about it again! 😛
What are the gifts in the red box supposed to be? I believe it’s food but what kind..
