So my wedding is more then a bit out (the date is wrong, it’s a date we’ve ‘picked’ as a goal but not an exact one), but I’ve already got one thing out of the way: My dress! Since I was a little girl, I’ve been in love with photos of my maternal grandparents at their wedding. They just look so happy and regal and I used to love looking at the big photos they had on shelves when I was growing up. My grandma and I were pretty close when I was a teenager, and I said once when I was younger that I wanted a dress like hers (it’s a satin ball gown, with hand done beading all the way up the bodice, 3/4 sleeves and a beauiful lace applique over the skirt. I’m trying to find a picture of it on my computer but no dice so far). She offered her dress to me, saying she would be happy as could be if I wanted to take it. She said I could change it in anyway I wanted, and had her will changed the next day so if anything happens, the dress is mine. I don’t want to change anything on it, and I can’t wait to wear my grandma’s dress!
I was wondering if any other Bee’s have worn vintage or family dresses. I know it’s not too common, even though lots of women hold on to their dresses for that reason. Even if the dress wasn’t in your family, I’d love to see vintage dresses worn by other brides!

I love vintage dresses! I hope you can find a picture soon for us. My moms dress fell apart or I def would have worn it. It was very classic and beautiful.

I wish I had access to my mom’s dress. She and my dad got married in 1980 I think and her dress was more 70’s style (flowy and minimalistic) I really could have used it for myself in the future… but she sent it to the local thrift store back in the 80’s 🙁 sad for me but at least someone else probably got to wear it.

@cirk: Oh wow !! Do you have any picutres of it ?? 😉

I dont and I’m really sad about this, because I thought I did. I’m from Calgary, Alberta but live in North Dakota, so I can’t even go and get photos that easily. I’m going home in April though, so I’m gonna get some photos of it then!

I’m actually wearing a vintage gown – it’s gorgeous! Probably from the 1950’s, with a lovely lace-edge bateau neckline and a-line skirt. No good pictures yet unfortunately!
The biggest problem I’m encountering so far is making sure I don’t look like I’m wearing a costume. I’m hoping to modernize it a bit with the right veil and jewelry.

That is so sweet, my grandma gave me her pearls and I bawled. Couldn’t imagine being offered her dress lol I’d be a total wreck (in a good way of course)

@0jennifer0: yeah I’m having the same problem. Her dress is very heavy and long and there’s a lot going on. I’m having a few alterations done to it (mostly because she was tiny and wore a ton of undergarmets and i could only dream of being able to fit into it the way it is), including a corset back, and i’m hoping to moderinize it with my acessories. We’re not doing a 50’s style wedding, which my whole family thought I was when I told them I was wearing my grandma’s dress.
@Mrs.Goguen: Oh I did haha. I was like 15 the first time, and weddings weren’t my thing. I just wanted to try on a pretty dress that I had loved since I was a kid, and I had never felt more pretty then in that dress. And the way my grandma’s face lit up was just pricesless. When I got older, and started dating SO and reminded her that I wanted to wear it, we both cried! it’s been a great bonding!
