There is a Personhood Bill up for vote in the State Senate. This personhood bill would give full rights to an embryo. How will this affect you? BC pills could be banned and definitely IUD’s would be banned because they don’t allow an embryo to implant and in effect murdering it. IVF would be hampered and embryo cryopreservation would be banned.
There are so many downstream effects that haven’t even been taken into consideration. A friend of mine has a frozen embryo from an earlier IVF procedure. If this bill passes, she is planning on claiming it as a dependent on her taxes. You laugh, but under this law, this would be legal.
I wish I was more eloquent getting this message out, but I hope my words move you to action. If you live in VA, please contact your State Senator (especially if he/she is a Republican). And I just called my State Senator, who is a Democrat, and his office recommends contacting the Governor’s office. If you don’t live in VA, first see if your state also has one of these bills—I’ve heard Oklahoma and Arizona may have similar bills. If it doesn’t, encourage your media outlets to mock Virginia or go onto social media like Twitter and FB to spread the message. If it passes in VA, you can be sure it will be in your state next.
