I had a dr’s appt scheduled for last Monday but I had to cancel it and I was going to ask my DR if it was ok to take Vit B6 alone or combined with B complex vitamins because I usually spot around 7DPO for a day or 2 and then it stops, until AF shows up. I’ve been doing some research and I heard it can help with early spotting and a short luteal phase? I am on my AF right now, so not sure if you are supposed to take them in the beginning of the cycle or after ovulation? Also did any of you start taking one or both of these vits before consulting with a DR first? I am going to make a dr’s appt but the earliest I can see her is this Friday and if I am supposed to start taking them early in the cycle than I would want to start now.

MRS-K: Are you taking a pre-natal vitamin? Most of them have all the B vitamins, but some have larger doses than others. I took B vitamins for morning sickness and while it’s hard to take too much (because they’re water soluble and you pee out the excess) you should be aware of how much you’re taking. I’d just start taking them now but other ladies that have taken them for a short luteal phase could probably give you more insight.

MrsAKSkier: I was taking pre-natals but Too Much Information they made me constipated and I mentioned it to my bestfriend and she said she didn’t start taking pre-natals until after she found out she was pregnant, so I stopped taking them but I think I am going to start taking them again because from what I hear they are very important. Maybe they will be good enough but I do recall still spotting while I was taking them. I think taking B vits shouldn’t do much harm if you just pee them out, maybe I will start off with a small dose. Even though you don’t have a short luteal phase thank you for your reply!

MRS-K: Try a prenatal without iron, like the gummie kind! My OB recommended starting prenatals 3 months before conception.

when I had my first cycle post partum, I only had an 8 day luteal phase. So at the beginning of my next cycle I took b6 as well as b complex. I heard it was better to take both so they balance out . ( or something to that effect.) That cycle I ended up getting pregnant, so I assume it helped as that was the only thing I changed. However, it could have just been my body regulating as well.
when I had my appt this week, I remembered to ask about all the vitamins I was taking, but forgot to ask about the b6 and b complex. If you can get and talk to your dr that would be best. In yte meantime I would think you could just start taking both either now, or when you finish af, whichever you prefer.
good luck

MRS-K: I agree with LittleRiver- it’s the iron in vitamins that will make you constipated, so get one without iron (the gummies don’t have iron). Or you can just take folic acid. You should definitely be taking folic acid (which is a B vitamin) before you actually conceive. Good luck!

LittleRiver: I will have to look into the gummie pre-natals, going to buy some tomorrow and start taking them right away.

LyndzJM: I guess it’s a worth a shot to take it and you became pregnant after taking them, that gives me hope, not saying it will happen to me but it’s worth trying something different, I am going into 5th cycle TTC now. I mentioned to my dr about the spotting before but I was going through a lot of stress at the time and she said that is probably what is causing it but I have been keeping track of my cycles and I am pretty sure that is not the case. She also said if I do not conceive in 6 months than to come and see her, I am going to be 35 in Oct. I think 5 months is almost 6 so I am going to make an appt and talk to her about my spotting and the vitamins and see what she says.

I have a very short cycle as well and started a bcomplex in hopes of length in got. I asked my ob/gyn and she said while she has seen no evidence or proveN documentation that it works she is fine with me taking that in addition to a prenatal. I read that it takes about three months before you will see the change in ur cycle

missstarling: So do you just take the B complex only or B6 vitamins as well? Anything is worth a shot right?

I took both B6 and B-complex (just B-6 for a time, then both for a while), and I don’t think they did anything to help with my short luteal phase. I have heard that B-6 can help with morning sickness once you are pregnant, and I know other ladies have seen an improvement with B-vitamins, it just didn’t work for me. I started Vitex(chasteberry) last month and added raspberry leaf tea this month, and honestly I think I’m seeing more improvement from those.
I didn’t talk to a doctor about the B-vitamins. Everything I read made me confident that there’s really no harm in adding them to a vitamin routine. And yes, please do find another prenatal that doesn’t make you constipated (sometimes just a brand change will do it, otherwise taking out the iron should do the trick). Having adequate folic acid for several months before conceiving is actually very important.

SadieBee: I am going to the drugstore tomorrow and get pre-natals and B6 and Bcomplex vitamins. Did you take them all at the same time? Also a long time ago I had a B12 defenciency and it was quite low, I took B12 vitamins and I had to get injections once a month from my dr but that was years ago, not sure if that would be related to the other B vitamins? Maybe if this doesn’t work, I will try vitex and raspberry leaf tea.

MRS-K: Yep, I took them all together. You’ll want to look at the amounts in each supplement, but I added the B6 because the amount included in prenatals (and even in the B-complex) is pretty low. Taking B6 to help with luteal phase issues (too short, spotting, etc) seems to require a higher dose than the 5mg or so included in a standard prenatal.

I had a semi-short LP so took 50MG of B6 daily. Not sure if it directly contributed, but the first cycle after I started taking it, my LP was 2-3 days longer and the second I conceived. I took it the same time as my prenatal.

My doctor told me to start the prenatal vitamin 3 months prior to TTC as well. I take Puritan Pride, and haven’t had any issues with them. As far as the spotting, I used to start spotting at about 6 or 7dpo with a 10 day LP. I added 100 mg to B6 and 1000 mg of Vitamin C. The first month I didn’t start spotting until 9dpo and my LP was lengthened 1 extra day. The next month I added Red Raspberry Leaf and my spotting started 11dpo and my LP was 12 days.
