Our venue is allowing us to significantly cut cost by choosing to serve only beer, wine, and one hard liquor. Fiance and I hate vodka with a passion but think that most guests will prefer vodka. Our moms think that our guests will prefer rum. I am an alcohol idiot so these two are really the only types of alcohol I am familiar with. Keep in mind that we can bring in any form of that alcohol and any brand with any kind of mixer. Whatever we pick, we will be serving it in every way possible. So… what should we pick?

I think vodka is pretty versitale. Maybe you want to do a whiskey or bourbon for people who want straight liquor instead of mixers like martinis (vodka)?

I definitely prefer rum or whiskey to vodka, but if vodka was my only hard liquor option, then I would drink it and it would’t be a big deal.

I don’t understand how you can “hate” vodka? I always was under the impression that vodka is technically a flavorless alcohol? Have you only drunk cheap vodkas?

@red_rose: IS THAT THE PROBLEM??? The ones I’ve tried are definitively not tasteless. They taste the way I imagine gasoline would. Foul. Truly… Foul. Also, the only time I have ever been panties-on-head drunk was with vodke. Oh… the embarrassing memories.

@jayebaby: Um try Pinnacle whipped cream, birthday cake, toasted marshmallow vodka-yum! FYI-I am not an alcoholic I have just attended a lot of birthday/graduation parties lately where they had these LOL!!
But I say vodka because like PP’s said, it is very versatile. But I know rum and coke is a very popular drink as well. But that’s about all I can think of that is popular with rum (but I am not a big drinker either).

I agree with other PP that vodka is the more versitile drink… I feel like more people would drink it if that was there only choice as opposed to rum… rum has a stronger flavor.

@jayebaby: i would say vodka, rum and tequila I’m a bartender and you can do so much with all three like margaritas, shots, with the tequila if you choose a whiskey or bourbon it will go very fast Caz they are usually served on the rocks, with coke, ginger ale or whiskey sours so you can mix it up. how many bottles are you planning to buy?

At our wedding, rum and vodka were the “big liquor winners”. But I noticed that it was mostly men drinking the rum and women drinking the vodka. If I had to pick between the two (for my own wedding), I would pick vodka. Most of our male friends would be 100% fine only drinking beer, whereas our women friends would chose vodka over wine.
@LRCWedding: whipped cream flavoured vodka???? Oh I can’t wait till my next trip to buy alcohol!

@LRCWedding: No offense, but I think all of those are awful, like vanilla gasoline instead of just gasoline!
OP, Grey Goose, Ciroc and Skyy taste cleaner than your typical Burnett’s/Smirnoff/Absolut.
But I’d much prefer a mid-shelf rum to a mid-shelf vodka.

I LOVE vodka, especially vanilla vodka with some cranberry juice. My mouth is watering thinking about it.

Both Rum and Vodka go with a wide variety of mixes… just about every sort of Pop and Juice for starters.
Vodka tends to be more popular these days than Rum… and for that reason alone, I’d say it is the better choice.
PS… I read where you said your first “big drunk” was on Vodka… so that explains it. Alot of folks are turned off by the first hard liquor they got massively wasted on (bad memories of a severe hang-over or worse). In my case it would be Gin… can’t handle the taste or smell… a total turn off.

I voted rum. For some reason vodka makes me DRUNK. Not a happy little buzz, it just takes one or two to knock me out. So I drink rum and my body seems to like that. However, I think vodka is more popular. My venue is similar, so I went with wine, beer and margaritas. To be honest, if the drinks are free your guests will drink and be happy!
