We had the officiant say the traditional vows.
Then we had time to share our own vows, which were basically us explaining to each other why we think our relationship was meaningful and strong and making additional promises for our marriage to stay strong.

It was THE most awesome part of my wedding. My favorite in pictures. The most memorable moment of my life.

We weren’t sure if we’d write our vows or not, but decided at the last minute to do them (mostly because our wedding being a Destination Wedding and we had no contact with the officiant, we didn’t know how the ceremony would go. so we decided to write them just in case it was too short). Very glad we did.

My fiancee wants us to write our own.  It makes me a little nervous because I’m shy and a private person about these things.  Our is supposed to be a few sentences about our “intentions” in marriage.  (I think like taking care of each other, not taking the other for granted, and taking care of ourselves kind of thing.)

I wanted to write our own (more than anything!!!), but I KNOW I’m going to be crying during the ceremony! I seriously doubt I could make it through my own vows-for all of you who are doing it, awesome!!!

Me too!  I think I would be a sobbing mess, barely able to speak.  I am seriously worried about this.

Hmmm I always cry at people’s weddings. I cry at weddings in movies… I always thought I’d cry at my wedding. But I didn’t. I cried when we went to bed that night. That’s when I cried. Before that, just smiles and laughs… Still amazed by it.

He knew I thought I’d cry, but he looked in my eyes the entire ceremony, to “keep me with him”, as he says.

All this only to say that we never know how we’re going to react! I’m a very private person, too. The vows made me nervous, but that was until it happened. It truly was the greatest moment ever. My husband looking me in the eyes and telling me these wonderful things. And then seeing him all happy hearing what I had to say to him.

We went back and forth a lot with the decision to have personal vows or not, and I really thought that all I wanted to say was “oui, je le veux”. I’m very, very happy that we chose the vows and really recommend it to those who hesitate.
