Depending on how much boning and cinching you want, yes they can be uncomfortable.

Pros:

They give you a tiny waist

They make your waist look AWESOME

They’re cheaper than full corsets

They do a lot for posture, as you can’t slouch in them

They can push your boobs up a bit. (Mine pushes thebottom of my bra up slightly so evenwhen I’m wearing it around my waist it still boosts my boobs up.

Cons:

They’re uncomfortable if they are done up quite snugly

The lacing/boming can show through some dresses

They can be expensive for a quality one

You can’t really ‘relax’ wearing one.

The more expensive quality ones are made with several layers of strong fabric and boning. Price does not equal quality, as the ones sold inlingerie stores on the whole are very pretty, but only have one layer os satin and plastic boning, yet still cost around $100.

I have a leather one that I wear on the outside of a few of my dresses. You can get a less bulky one that won’t be apparent through the dress, but if the dress’ fabric is super thin or filmy then a cincher may show through.

Don’t waist cinchers basically push your fat out and around it? Gah… not flattering, nor smooth where the waist cincher ends.
