Janelle123:  Wow your cat is in heaven! We feed our cats 1/4 cup of dry food in the morning (6 am) each. Then around noon we give them another 1/4 cup of wet food (can food) to each one. At night (6pm), we give them another 1/4 cup each of dry food. Sometimes, depending on how fast they finished the food left at night, we give them another 1/4 cup of dry food before going to bed, but this rarely happens. We give them treats 1-2 times a week. This includes cooked chicken, tuna, some ham, or bag treats. I don’t believe in making sure they have food 24/7, and I think chubby cats might look cute, but just as we humans extra weight is not a good thing. I agree with your Fiance that you’re giving your cat too much food.

candy11:  Damn, looks like Fiance might be right after all… Thanks for going into detail about the feeding. I may have to start doing something similar

Janelle123:  I would ask your vet what the best amount for your cat would be. I’ve always been able to get away with free-feeding dry food for all of my cats and so has Darling Husband so I can’t really give you much advice. We give our cat a half a can of wet food when we remember. We aim for twice a week since it’s good for them to have wet food too.

Janelle123:  I learned a lot from my Darling Husband that grew up with cats. His parents have lots of cats and dogs, so he knows quite a lot about cats. I read a lot for a while when we first got our first cat. Maybe, you can try to start cutting the food instead of just taking it away from your cat. Start with giving him half of each thing. That way he doesn’t feel stressed or annoyed. Cats have very particular personalities.

LiliKitty:  I grew up with skinny cats that were always free fed so when I got my own cat I didn’t think it would be a problem. I guess he takes advantage of it unlike my childhood cats.

candy11:  Yeah I think it will have to be a slow process of cutting back on the food.

LiliKitty:  We’ve also talked about maybe moving to TX one day, if we ever get tired of Atlanta. If I stay with my current company though, it would have to be Dallas, since that’s where our office is.
