I’ve been following along but I was going to wait until part 18 to roll call as we haven’t quite decided exactly when we’re going to start TTC.

But I wanted to sk a question and I wondered if you ladies might be able to help. Is it ok to start taking prenatals already, even though we might not actually end up TTCing for a year or so? Are there any dangers associated with this?

I already take folic acid as there’s a history of neural tube defects in my family, but I’m not taking any other TTC-related vitamins.

penny29:  nope, it’s basically just taking a vitamin.  My gyn told me to start taking them as soon as she saw my engagement ring!

arielmerms:  follow up question to the above – is there any real difference between a prenatal vitamin and a multi vitamin with folic aside?

RedWine13:  no idea, sorry! I would check the levels of a prenatal and your multivitamin to see what, if anything, differs.  I wasn’t taking a daily multivitamin so my doc just wanted me to start taking prenatals.

penny29:  No danger and, in fact, possibly a benefit to starting prenatals early!  For example, a study in 2009 found that taking folic acid for a year or longer before TTC may help prevent preterm labor.  A later study was unable to find a statistically significant correlation, but it certainly can’t hurt to start early.

ETA Oops, I just saw that you are already taking folic acid, and your question was about other vitamins in prenatals as opposed to a regular multi.  Another Bee who is a nurse posted a cheat sheet for prenatals somewhere — let me see if I can find it.

RedWine13:  I can’t find the info all in one place, but there is a lengthy discussion of what to look for in prenatal vitamins beginning on this page:

http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/poas-november-2014/page/22 (discussion continues off and on to page 32!)

Here’s the Cliff’s Notes version:

  • Iron
  • Iodine
  • Folic acid, preferably as folate
  • DHA > 300mg (most prenatals that include DHA contain only 200mg)
  • No vitamin A or vitamin A as beta carotene, not palmitate

I just checked a bottle of adult multis we’ve got in the house and they’re missing most of this list!

RunnerBride13:  Oh, that’s fantastic news!  I’m so glad you’re going straight to a specialist.  When I was in your shoes, I spent months wringing my hands and going through testing with my OB, only to be referred to an RE anyway — and of course he redid all the tests!  FX you get some answers soon!!

RunnerBride13:  Glad you got an earlier appointment with a specialist!

AFM, Darling Husband is anxious to start TTC, and now I’m considering moving up our date slightly to May-ish, but we’ll see. I kind of told Darling Husband that if he had some serious baby planning discussions with me, as soon as everything is discussed and figured out, then we could start trying. (He’s a less talking, more action kinda guy.) Well wouldn’t you know, he wanted to have all those convos the next evening. He’s funny. One of the questions I wanted us to talk about was “when will we be done having kids”, which I meant to mean more along the lines of “when is the latest we’ll try to have a baby?” I said we should be done before Darling Husband is 40. He said “40?! How about 32?!” Well, he’ll be 31 next month… can you tell he’s anxious to start and finish having kids? Haha.
