Here’s the story!
I knew that he wanted to whisk me off for my 1st trip to NYC and I suspected that perhaps he would propose at some point, but I tried not to think about it as much since posting in this thread. I wanted to enjoy our NYC trip with or without a potential engagement!
Well, last week, he mentioned that we should go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art because there is a historical musical instrument collection that he thought I would like to see during our trip. I agreed that we should make a stop there, but I didn’t think that it would be the place where he proposed. For some reason, I thought that maybe it would be over dinner or something like that.
We arrived in NYC on Friday afternoon and we went to the Met on Saturday afternoon. We walked around the museum for a couple of hours before heading to the musical instrument collection. As soon as we got to the collection, I started geeking out over all the super cool instruments. We started with nonwestern instruments of Africa, India, and Asia. Then we headed to the western instruments. I was taking so many pictures and chatting with him really excitedly about the instruments and how cool the collection was. As we moved through the western instruments, we looked at horns, double reeds, flutes, etc. Then we reached the guitars followed by the historic keyboard instruments. I was super excited at this point because I studied historic keyboard instruments as my secondary during my undergraduate studies (piano was my primary). Also, as I mentioned, music is very important to both of us. I studied music therapy in graduate school and I’m employed as a music therapist. Also, the first thing we bonded over when we met online was our love of music. He plays guitar and has a huge appreciate for a great variety of music, as do I.
Anyway, as we reached the end of the keyboard section, the final piece was the Golden Harpsichord of Michele! I was amazed because I’ve never seen a keyboard instrument so beautiful. It was dimly lit in this section of the collection and I was just pretty much in awe of the instruments. I started to focus on taking the perfect picture of it and apparently, while I was doing this, my fiance stood behind me and prepared himself to propose.
When I had finally acheived taking the perfect photo, I was still staring at my iphone with my back to my fiance because I wanted to post the harpsichord on facebook to share with my friends. My fiance said something like, “Hey, you should check this out too.” I think that I thought he was referring to an instrument that I might hae missed, so I turned around quickly and there he was the the ring!
I never thought I could be overcome with so many emotions at once, but I grabbed him quickly and started crying and laughing. It hit me that he had brought me there specifically to propose to me and I didn’t have a clue before! It was the last scenario that I had imagined during my “waiting bee” period! Then, I was so happy because he knew how much I wanted the proposal to be a complete surprise and he had totally nailed it! I knew I wanted to marry him before, but for him to propose to me in a room surrounded by instruments (specifically, historic keyboard instruments) and to choose a moment when he saw I was completely happy and living in the moment was so much more than I could have ever asked for. Pretty much, that moment made me sure beyond a doubt that I want to spend the rest of my life with him.
So, I said “yes,” called our parents, and made it facebook officlal for all our friends 🙂 We spent the rest of the weekend celebrating in NYC before returning to Philly on Sunday evening! What a romantic weekend! I’m still so happy!!
Now for pictures!
I took this picture right before turning around for his proposal!
The ring and my love’s hand! He picked it out all by himself and I think he did a great job 🙂
