I have no experience, but I do think you are smart to go with your instincts and at least explore the possibility of switching photographers.

Could you tell your photographer that you love her earlier style and would prefer your pictures to be similar?

Yeah, that makes sense. For that much money, go out and get the photographer that you want!

I think you are making a lot of assumptions and seem to already have your mind set, regardless of the thoughts presented here.

Photographers evolve style to meet a certain niche and please a population of customers.  Just because she shot a few weddings with a different style doesn’t mean she isn’t capable of doing what she did in the past.  I would discuss this with her.

@prncss47: To me a bigger issue would be the personalities not meshing. When I booked a photographer I talked with several over the phone because planning was long distance. I had a great phone conversation with the photographer I chose, but when we met in person (after I had paid the $1250 deposit)~neither my hubby nor myself meshed with her. If I had the money to walk away from the deposit I would have…..but I didn’t and I do regret staying with the original photographer. Not because I received bad images, but because of the stress associated, some shots that were missed the day of and the fact that it took 5 months to receive digital images.

In my opinion, I think you should talk to your current photographer about your concerns-both with their artistic images and about the differences in personalities. If you are still uneasy, then look at booking a different photographer.

Photographers sometimes feel the same way… that perhaps they don’t mesh well personality-wise… or perhaps their style doesn’t match your expectations. But, being that this is their livelihood, it’s very hard to say no to a bride who wants you to photograph their wedding.

So, you just never know… perhaps this photographer is thinking the exact same things as you, and will be slightly relieved when you cut it off. Just tell them that, after giving it a lot of thought, you don’t think that their style matches what you hope for in your wedding photography. I think that’s really the best thing you can say in a situation like this.

Good luck!
