Hi all! I love my engagement ring. It’s a simple yellow gold solitaire with a marquise diamond. I chose it and I thought about it for a long time (it seemed like) while my Fiance and I were ring shopping. Even though I had been dead set on a yellow gold solitaire, towards the end of ring shopping and for the period before he popped the question, I started thinking of different settings.
We have been engaged for 6 months now and sometimes I think of what my diamond might look like in a different setting. The problem is I go back and forth. So I will be set on thinking of how to bring this up to Fiance and which setting, and then I’ll change my mind and think of how I love my solitaire and wouldn’t change it.
So any advice is welcome especially if you’ve been in this situation yourself: did you change your original setting and love it just the same as the original? Any regrets? Will these feelings go away when I add a wedding band?
I have included pictures of my solitaire and of settings (from BN) that I have eyed:

What a gorgeous ring! It’s very classic and I personally wouldn’t change it. I understand having second thoughts because there are SO many ring options out there. Have you chosen a wedding band yet? That will definitely change the look of the ring. An eternity wedding band would be a nice option and dress up the set.

lunamoon: I’m going to be no help because I think your ring is classic and gorgeous especially on your lovely hand. I have reset countless times (older bee here) and found out in the end that I love a solitaire. But you need to do what you love. Good luck!!
A band could definitely bring a nice extra bit of sparkle.

I think it is beautiful as is. I am in the same position, but mine is in an ornate setting and I have been thinking about putting it into a simple solitaire. I cant actually commit to doing so, but I think about it often.

lunamoon: I love marquise diamonds, so I’m a bit biased, but your ring is beautiful! From the pictures you posted, you want a little somthing extra than your current band, and depending on what kind of wedding band you get, that might solve the problem without having to reset your ring. A lot of plain engagement ring bands pair nicely with detailed wedding bands:
This is not my ring (I do have a marquise engagement ring) and I like how the plain band looks with the pave wedding band, and there are so many different kinds of bands you could pair with your ring.
If you do want to reset, then go for it! I would just think about what kind of wedding band you’d want to pair with the new setting.
Here’s my ring and the bands I’m considering:

ponyrider: Oh pretty! Then you can use those baguettes and rounds in your current setting for a killer eternity band!

I’ll be likely resetting the marquise e-ring from my previous marriage – just into a fun ring for myself – one day, and I’m heavily considering an east-west setting. Make sure you check those out as you marinate in ideas, even if you end up sticking with your classic (which I love!).

lunamoon: oh my gosh your ring is gorgeous!! i wouldn’t change a thing! i love solitares though…i feel like they really show off the stone.
i personally do not like the settings you posted, even though they are beautiful just not my taste. although the first setting you posted i would like if it was just plain pave and not the accent stones. so i guess i am no help lol!
you could get a beautiful band to go with yours or maybe a wrap or something. almost anything goes with solitares!

lunamoon: Aargh! Your ring is perfect as it is. I love it on your hand. I don’t like any of the alternative settings you’ve posted nearly as much. Your current setting really shows off the stunning diamond.
You might be spending too much time on ring boards (like me), and consequently overthinking things. Since you chose it initially, I suspect it’s just a bit of “what if” syndrome.
Of course it’s all down to personal taste and if you are sure, sure, sure you’d prefer it in a more ornate, busy setting then that’s all that matters, however if you are at all unsure then I wouldn’t touch it. You could always change it at a later date but I can’t imagine it looking more lovely than it does right now. I love the proportions of your marquise and I think the yellow gold really sets it off. I have a round brilliant set in platinum (by choice) so it’s not bias on my part.

I would absolutely leave it as is! It’s gorgeous, at the very least, I would wait until its paired your wedding band and see how you feel.

Honestly, I’ve just scrolled up to look at your hand shots again and that thing is just gorgeous. I can’t imagine you wouldn’t regret the change (sorry, – given up trying to be even handed – it’s just too beautiful). however if you want to post more pics just to be sure…

The only way I’d wear a marquis is in an east-west setting. I LOVE those, particularly bezel set.

Thanks ladies you all give great advice. I don’t have a wedding band picked out yet, but have thought about stacking a diamond vine band and a diamond pave band OR getting a bigger TCW single prong diamond band. So like many of you have stated maybe adding a band will dress it up some.
ladyvictoria: ponyrider: I love looking at fellow marquise wearers rings!!! Beautiful!
emwbride: yeah I’ve thought of a ring similar to that! Thanks for sharing it!

Your ring is a show-stopper. Just gorgeous! I, like others, have reset my diamond multiple times, only to land back on a solitaire. It is just so classic, elegant, and durable. I vote to leave it as is!
