this experience is specific to the NYC Priscilla of Boston but I feel like it could happen anywhere and might be useful info.
I bought a Melissa Sweet dress that required a very intricate bustle. they promised me they were the best and would do it perfectly. the bustle alone was $500 in alterations. when they pinned it it looked perfect.
at the next fitting they brought it to me with the bustle done up. I was later told by the manager this should not have happened. they should have brought it undone, put it up for me, showed me each and every detail of how to do it (using two mirrors and also while not on my body), and then taken it back down. in my case, it looked ok, they told me it was right, and I went ahead and shipped it to my mom’s house which is far from any P of B store.
I got home to my mom’s, put on the dress and we realized they had messed up the loops. not horribly, since obviously it had looked ok the last time I had it on, but enough that the dress wouldn’t hang right once I moved around. we called and felt the manager was not very helpful, had almost a rude tone and wasn’t really listening to us. this was a stress I so did not need so close to the wedding! it totally turned me off their store – they do have beautiful dresses but you can purchase them elsewhere.
my real learning is that ESPECIALLY if you have a complicated bustle, you probably need someone else as backup with you at the last fitting and you need to make sure you understand every detail. also, move around quite a bit with the bustle up and make sure it won’t fall out or have wings.
luckily we knew someone to fix it locally and it all turned out ok, but I just would not have thought they would have made this big of a mistake – one that the alterations person could NOT have missed because there were loops missing when she put the bustle up – and then be so unhelpful when we called.
so, learn from my mistake and put in a lot of time understanding the bustle!!
