I just found out the hard way that PayPal Purchase Protection does not apply to custom-made items.
This means that the vast majority of stuff you buy on Etsy, PayPal will plain not cover you if something goes wrong. Even if you don’t receive the item, or the item is clearly not what you ordered.

If you are buying anything “custom” on Etsy–which means anything made to order, really–make sure you pay with a credit card, so that you have your chargeback power through your credit card issuer. This is a good idea always, but I have to admit sometimes I get lazy and just let PayPal do the bank draft, figuring I’ll be covered through them if something goes wrong. NOT.
