My employer doesn’t even have a maternity leave policy, so you have to use sick time.

It’s completely dependent on your workplace so it’s something you’d have to ask HR about.  At my work we get 3 months at 60% pay on short term disability but are not able to extend it with sick or vacation time (we can use STD or a sick/vacation combo but most people don’t have 3 months saved up).  I’ve heard others that have been able to use vacation time.

I also get 3 months paid maternity leave and at my job you can add on as much vacation time as you want to that. I’ll probably add at least 2 weeks of vacation time on myself. It’s really up to your company policy tho, but I dont see why they wouldnt let you, if you have the vacation time.

I’m in Canada, so it’s different..but my employer “strongly encourages” (aka essentially forces) you to use accrued vacation time before coming back. So I will have accrued 3 weeks while off, and they tacked it on at the end of my mat leave, so I get 55 weeks.

Prettysmile40 :  it’s insane to me that moms in the US get so little. It’s not right.

I have so much respect for the moms who make it work with short mat leaves…I can’t imagine being able to function at work 8 or even 12 weeks after giving birth.

Prettysmile40 :  legally in the US you don’t get anything.  You can use unpaid (or some places let you use STD) FMLA for 3 months if you work for a company with 50 or more employees and have been there at least a year but that’s it.  Not good for moms or babies!  That’s why we need to advocate for better parental leave policies!

Curlycupcake :  Yes. I work for the federal government that there is no maternity leave. You take your sick and vacation time and FMLA if you need more.

Yes. My firm gives us 6 weeks of short term disability, plus 6 weeks of parental leave, and after that we can use up as much of our PTO as we want.

Prettysmile40 :  I’d consider you lucky!  I also work for a large university and it definitely has plenty of money since it’s an Ivy League but the policy isn’t that great.  Thankfully my state senate passed a paid family leave act that would give workers at least 4 months leave.  I’m due in February and it sadly won’t go through in time but it’ll be great for others.

I was able to use my vacation and sick days tacked on to the end of my maternity leave. I talked with my senior supervisor a ways in advance and he was very helpful in getting me the time off (His basic words were- we’ll make this work). Like above- I had just under a year off.

I live in Canada.
