Our house that we purchased last year included a Whirlpool Duet frontloading washing machine. Since we moved in I have noticed that there is always a moldy smell. I started doing research and have found that front loading machines are apparently very high maintenance and you are supposed to dry them out, clean them regularly, and leave them open when not in use. I had no idea you were supposed to do all that!
Who else has front loading machines and are you having the same problems? My research indicates that all brands require that kind of maintenance and that is just not practical for us. We have kids and a dog and our machine is never empty.
At this point we are just considering going back to a top loading machine.

I had the same problem before but the only thing I do is leave the door open when I’m not using it. We have had it for 6 years and have not done any maintenance on it at all.

We special ordered a GE Super capacity with an agitator two years ago and I love it. We had one without the agitator (top load) and nothing ever got clean, not like it was supposed to anyway. If you can still find one, I love ours and it is big enough for our queen comforter.

We have Samsung frontloader and dryer. Love them. And they are pretty and have melodies that get annoying, but love em!

@tksjewelry: Thats what the lady at Home Depot told us to get. She also said that the same thing about the ones with no agitator.
Buying a new washer is way harder than it should be!

@Derbybride: Just a week ago I heard a story on the news where people are paying so much more to fix the older ones then buy a new one without. I don’t know if it has something to do with them taking the sulfates out of the soaps, or the way they are washing them, but I am really curious.

We have a LG and knew about the problems with front loaders. After every wash I leave the door open half way for the thing to dry out and do the tub clean once a month. We have had the washer for a year and half and noooo smell

I’ve also heard that for the front loads, just wipe out the little tray after you’re done with that round of laundry. Some of the musty smell can come from the water/detergent sitting in there.

@Carolyn72: LOL I have the Samsung front loaders as well and LOVE them, but HATE that stinkin song it plays when its done!
OP- I just take a little rag that I leave on top of the washer and do a quick wipe of the door and opening then leave the door open slightly! No problems!

I have a Samsung front loader and I have never had any issues. We’ve had it for a year and a half and I’ve never had to do any cleaning or maintenance and there is no musty smell. We leave it open for a few hours after we’re done using it so that it can dry and then we close it until we use it again.
My parent also have a front loader that they have had for at least 10 years and have never had an issue with smell or maintenance.

If you just leave the door open after you do a load, you won’te get that smell. Also, they sell tablets (Affresh is the brand) to run in your machine to clean them out. The salesman recommended we run a tablet once every six months. We’ve had our machine (Maytag) for nine months and still don’t need to run a tablet.

We had this problem and tried just about everything without any luck. The smell will come and go and I even wrote about it one time on here. So far, the only thing that has helped was to switch to powder detergent.
