If you call your doctor and tell them you have thrush, they may be willing to call you in an oral rinse since you have an upcoming appointment.

Are you on advair?  Unfortunately this will not go away on its own – definitely call the prescribing doctor and let him or her know you’ve developed oral thrush.  They will need to prescribe some oral antifungals, usually nystatin or clotrimazole.  It is a common (and unpleasant) side effect with steroids so they should be able to send you in a script without an office visit.

Ask yout doctor for Dukes magic mouth wash. You will need to have it filled at a companding pharmacy to have it made. It was he only thing that I found to kill the thrush and help with the pain.

I agree with the above posters! You need an Rx. Nystatin rinse or losenges! I hope you feel better soon!

Kandykane:  You MUST rinse your mouth very well after using any corticosteroid. You will need an antifungal to get rid of the yeast infection.

Kandykane:  disclaimer: I work in dentistry.

get to your doctor and get an appointment set up ASAP. the longer you sit on this, the worse the fungal infection will get, and the longer it will take to go away. there aren’t good home remedies for this. the salt water is soothing the inflammation, but not treating the fungus.

and, for future, rinse AFTER using the inhaler.

Kandykane:  Don’t let this go. You have no idea how difficult it can be to get rid of some fungal infections. Any chance you’re diabetic?

Do yourself a favor – get tested for DM, even if you’re not overweight.

Thrush with asthma meds are pretty common. It creates a environment that the fungus really likes.

Talk with your DDS or MD and they should Rx you a anti-fungal rinse to get rid of the overgrowth. Try and sip some water after you take your medicine in the future, it should help reduce fungal growth.

I disagree about getting tested for diabetes, at least at this time. Although, oral fungal infections can be a sign of a immunocompromised patient (which diabetes falls under), the combination of thrush + asthma meds are so common that it’s the pretty clear differential diagnosis at this time (of course, given I haven’t looked in your mouth – so take this all with a grain of salt and in respect that I’m a random internet person). If a antifungal rinse doesn’t clear this up, then I would explore testing for diabetes.

I take Advair and I got thrush once from it.  Try rinsing with an alcohol mouthwash like listerine after you use it rather than just plain water.

In the mean time gargle and rinse your mouth with warm salt water while you wait to see a dr.  it will make you feel less gross.  You can also take probiotics
