oh pshhh. I am 4’11”, but with an hourglass figure, and I looked (excuse the self-flattery) awesome in mermaids. It wasn’t the route I ultimately went with, but hey I picked a big full princess skirt which I was also told I couldn’t pull off because I’m short. It’s just a matter of the whole design of the dress, not just the shape. For example, my full skirt has box-pleats so it draws the eye up and the skirt is otherwise un-detailed and non-fussy so that you are drawn to the bodice, not the bottom.  You REALLY have to try a dress on to know if it will flatter you or not (I never would have guessed how good the dress I picked would look on me).

The dress will be order to be proportionate to your body and/or tailored to fit.

I am exactly your height

Here are two fitted shapes on me a fit and flair and then a higher mermaid and while neither are my dress I think they are fine with my height

and the fit and flare ordered to be for a 5’4.5″ body

I honestly tried on every shape out there – some dresses worked some did not but at my height and very average weight (i fit in the sample 8s and 10s) there was not a shape that did not work for me except for empire because they made me look pregnant and most a-lines were to high for my long waist and hid my shape

Yeah this worries me! I go dress shopping tomorrow but I know I love mermaids! I’m 5’5 and hadn’t even considered height to be an issue. I have a taller friend getting married and she got a more full skirt dress and we were talking about how it would look ridiculous on me but it’s good on her because she’s tall. We also talked about how mermaid is perfect for me- everyone has said so. I guess we will see!

So what are short girls *supposed* to wear?

@kerri13: well gee guess I will look funny because I am wearing huge dropped waist ballgowns with crinolines and the really full skirts show off how the fitted dropped waist makes me look so tiny lol

Just try on lots of different styles – everybody is different and every dress is different and there is a match made in heaven out there for your body and the perfect dress for you ๐Ÿ™‚

@unixfairy:Lol I think I need to get my dress lingo down because actually what I want is not a mermaid, it’s a fit and flare with a drop waist.

I really don’t think huge poofy skirts look bad on short girls, i just personally can’t see myself wearing them!

Plenty of avg. or short girls look great in mermaids. I’m 5’5, but here’s the thing, no matter what I’m going to be sporting 4 in. heels. So, if I’m wearing a mermaid, I’m no longer 5’5, I’m 5’9. That isn’t exactly short. You can’t exclusively go by how tall a person is. Their figure and shoes could really play into it. I really don’t agree with that guy. ๐Ÿ™‚

@Mrs.Firefly1: Yes dropped waist ballgowns.  They are both at the alterationist right now but I was amazed at how they were going to look with the hips and waist fitting better (they are both heavily boned and were too big with the fuller skirt.  I have a large chest and I did not want my chest to be the focus of my dress and the big skirt balanced that out and the dropped waist fit my longer torso better showing off my waist.

I know that at my age I am supposed to wear something less over the top but I felt best and happiest in that style.

HAVE fun try on lots and lots and lots.  I am so glad I kept searching until I found the ones that really made me feel beautiful ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh this is just silly! I’ve seen the most extraordinarily petite girls in mermaids (I’m talking barely 5′), and they look just beautiful! Don’t worry about it – as others have said, the dress will be ordered in your size and altered to fit you. And I’m sure you’ll look amazing in a mermaid. ๐Ÿ™‚

It’s just about proportions in the end. Like PPs have mentioned, the dress would be made to your proportions so what that SA said is bull.

I am taller (5’7″) and I had to order my dress with extra length and pay for it. Ugh, not pleased with that at all. I didn’t even think about my height in any of the dresses though, I think it all gets thrown off when they make you stand on that raised box.

Heres a pic of my in the first one I tried on and the one Im getting replicated. Ignore the bra strap, and the back, it was waaaaaay too big for me!
