So my engagement story proved to be a little controversial on the Waiting Boards yesterday…but you know what, I am the happiest I have ever been in my life!
Some background: my…wait for it…FIANCE (!) and I have been together 2 years, 5 months and 1 day and I moved in with him 3 weeks ago. Originally the plan was that we would be engaged before I moved in. For reasons best known to Fiance, but explained to me, this did not happen.
The other night (after too much wine) I got rather…upset at the lack of progress and he explained that he was having trouble coming up with a romantic idea for the proposal. Something that is quite important to me, not the be all and end all, but I am a very creative person and enjoy dreaming up lovely situations and things.
He said to me, “You know this is 2013, you could propose to me if you like.”
Now, I am a pinup girl. I dress in 1950s gear every day and I like old fashioned ideas like men holding doors, tipping their hats etc. Proposing is NOT something I ever imagined doing!
However, such as my creative mind works…an idea immediately formulated and I came up with the plan to propose to him to..well..propose.
We live in his dvd rental store. Our whole lives revolve around movies. The store closes at 10pm and he was due home from his squash game at 11pm, so while he was out I hid envelopes in dvd covers with clues on them all relating to movies that are a part of our romantic history. Inside the envelopes were individual reasons of why I want to marry him.
When he got home I gave him the first clue an off he went. He had no idea what it was all about as I had said that I wanted to do something nice for being so awful the other day.
We both had so much fun and it brought back some lovely memories.
The final clue was in his all time favourite movie’s case and it told him that now would be a good time to go an put a certain something in his pocket and then check to see if he had a new love note. (We have a blackboard wall in our bedroom where we write little messages to each other). At this stage he clicked! He didn’t have any idea before of what was actually happening apparently, he just thought I was doing one of my cute, “let me surprise Manfriend” things!
Off he went an when he opened the door from the shop to our living quarters he found a candle lit, rose petaled path leading to a bedroom full of candles and a note on the blackboard “Dr Rxxxx Jxxx Sxxx, will you do me the great honour of proposing?”
His grin was HUGE!
He took my hand, got down on one knee and said beautiful things…which I can’t remember, but luckily I had the video camera running!
Then he slipped my beautiful ring on my finger…after I corrected which hand he had firmly grasped!
I had two glasses of bubbly poured, so we locked elbows and toasted and then tried to get some sleep as it was by this time 1am!
I have never been happier in my life and although this wasn’t the proposal I had imagined, I love that we both had a part in it and we made it special for each other, which really, is what it’s all about.
He also loved that I proposed to him to propose! He thought it was great that he still got to ask the question, which he knew meant a lot to me, but that I did all the romantic stuff which he so dreads! Win-win!
And now ring porn!!!
I know lots of people won’t like my ring, but I don’t care, it’s exactly what I dreamed of and I spent hours scouring the net to find one! I had sent him the link months ago, saying “just in case” and as you can imagine, he has no knowledge of jewellery, so he was relieved!
I’m a girly girl and I love having different things. Rubies are my favourite gemstone and my FI’s birthstone, so I am so in love with this gorgeous piece of fabulousness!
