- Wedding: April 2014
We did it. After being engaged for almost three years, surviving his psycho ex-wife, and my money-hungry ex-SO, we’re finally Mr and Mrs. And it was something I’d been thinking about for a while. I like the thoughts of a fancy fairy-tale wedding, but we’re both 43, encore, and have been financially independent for more than 25 years, and spending THAT much money just wasn’t feeling right. Add to that Mr Canuck’s work visa expiration in September, and we had a recipe that spelled ELOPE.
After a conference call last Monday with his immigration attorneys (his business is international, and they have them on retainer for convenience sake) it was suggested that we make things legal prior to the expiration of his visa this year. He came home and told me about the conversation, I picked up my handy calendar, and decided that since I had a hair appointment on Thursday, and I liked the date (4/24/14 – all those fours) that I was good with Thursday.
The DJ that we had contacted about our October wedding is an ordained minister, and after a quick e-mail and phone conversation Monday evening, was happy to meet us at our home on Thursday evening. We applied for our marriage license on Tuesday morning; the deputy clerk that helped us didn’t even ask for ID! My son was there, along with my BFF and her husband. After our short ceremony, we had dinner at a local restaurant.
Mr Canuck wore a suit that he had, and I wore white pants. Not exactly bridal, but for the evening (and me) it was perfect. We’re planning to book some time with a professional photographer later in May to do formal bridal photos.
We are very happy that we decided to save ourselves a lot of money by not having an expensive wedding/reception. Now we can travel like we’ve talked about. 🙂
