Not even an hour into our trip back home we got into an accident that totaled my car. An older man slammed on his breaks and caused 5 cars to rear end each other. Thankfully we are all fine. Now we have to rent a car, drive 15 more hours and then I have to buy a new car. I had my car for 10 years and was hoping to make it last 2 more. We are buying a home in 8 months and were hoping to save money.
Kind of a shitty way to start the new year 🙁
sorry this just a vent

I’m really sorry to hear that. I assume you don’t have any idea how much insurance will put towards your new car? I hope everything works out and I’m sending positive vibes your way.

Glad you all are okay. Insurance will hopefully cover a good bit, but it still sucks having to get a new car unexpectedly. I’ve heard that winter is a good time to score deals on new cars, so you have that going for you 🙂

@bmo88: Oh no- car accidents are the worst:( I’m glad everyone is ok though. Sending positive thoughts your way and hopping the rest of your 2014 is much better!

We only had liability inaurance because it’s so old and only worth about $2k. So we won’t get anything for it.

thank you for the positive thoughts. I am trying to not let this damper the last few days of our vacation, but seeing the silver lining is awfully difficult right now.

Boo that sucks!
Last summer my 10 year old car was totaled as well. I was stopped at a stoplight and some jacka$$ rear ended the line of stopped cars. I was in the middle of the group and got smushed on both ends. Luckily no one was seriously hurt, but the idiot who caused the thing did a hit and run (don’t know HOW his car was still functional).
I loved that car and it was still running like new. 🙁 Anyway, life goes on and at the end of the day it’s just a car. I hope you are ok!

@cbgg: yee thankfully everyone is good. But you are right, it is the sentimental part that is kind of hard to deal with too. It is just a car but I made a decade of memories with it.

Oh i am so sorry to hear that. But glad everyone is ok. Car shopping sucks! Especially around the holidays because it means the registration is due around holidays. We got hit by a drunk driver on drugs 3 years ago and it totaled my 6 month old car. Had to buy a new 1 2 weeks before Christmas. Sucks!

@bmo88: I know just how you feel. I cried looking at my sweet car, not thinking about the money, just because I loved it and took such good care of it and then all in one moment someone ruined it. So sad thinking of it getting carted off to a junk yard somewhere.
Somehow it’s hard to think of your car as an inanimate object when it’s been a part of your life for so long.

I’m very sorry to hear that. I just totaled mine two days ago. I’m still kind of shaken up. I live at the bottom of a mountain. As I was driving a huge rock fell right in front of me while I was driving. This mountain is known for that. It was unavoidable. I’m pretty bummed but thankful to be alive. That mountain is no joke. I call it the death defying mountain.

@Glenda_the_good_witch: that would be terrifying! Sorry to hear you had an accident too. I am a little shaken up still too. I was sleeping but woke up as the car was skidding and then saw us slamming into the back of the truck.

Glad to hear you guys are OK. That is the important thing !!
Sorry to hear about your car… unexpected expenses always suck !!
More so when you are planning something else substantial to do with your money.
