To make a long story short, Fiance and I called off our engagement in May ’10, but continued dating, and working on our relationship. I, however, had moved out with our Dirty Delete. Fast-forward to May of this year when he proposed again.. and, this past weekend when we moved back in with him..
During the 2 1/2 hour drive from my (old!) place, we had gotten to talking about all the missed opportunities with houses we had had in the past–each house we liked seemed to sell within 4 days before we could get an offer in, etc.–anyway, as we were driving back to his apartment, he made a wrong turn (so I thought), but kept going. In the end, he pulled up in front of a house, and asked, “Was this one of the houses that we had looked at?” It wasn’t, and just as I was about to correct him, he handed me a key, and quipped, “Well, you better go check it out, and make sure you like it!“
As it turns out, he closed on the house back in July (the 15th), and had kept it a secret from me as a ‘Welcome Home’ present of sorts. *shock and awe*.
It’s quite a work in progress, as we have absolutely no flooring in, the roof just got completely replaced, we’re expecting new windows/doors, etc., but I love it! And, I can’t believe Fiance did this for us/our family/ I’m seriously the luckiest, spoiled girl in the world!
I can’t wait to decorate, and put all of our little touches on it..

I’m happy for you, but honestly, i’d be PISSED if my fiance/husband bought a house without my input. That’s way too big a purchase – not to mention the fact that it is your home – for him to make without consulting you at all.

@crayfish: I can see your point, but we had discussed in length what we were looking for, what we could afford, etc.–he consulted me during the process of buying, but never actually telling me he had found the place, really–and this house turned out to be everything we were looking for, and more, and all for a very, very reasonable price. His parents we going to scoop it up to flip/rent if he didn’t grab it, actually.

That’s so special. I normally am big on making financial decisions together, but I think this is perfect! Congrats!

That’s awesome and very exciting!
I’m with @crayfish though, if hubby had bought a house without me I would have been super pissed. But that’s just personality differences at work!

I am super picky so I might be upset. But since you guys were both on the same page, CONGRATS!

I wouldn’t turn that gift down! Good for you girl!

As Fiance has said, he bought the roof and walls, but we both get to make it a home. Luckily we’ve agreed on every design aspect so far (carpet/flooring, cabinets, counter-tops, etc.)!

Thats very special! And the fact that your happy with it, and his surprise is what matters! Being a homeowner is so much work, but also so much fun!
