- Wedding: September 2011
Fiance and I went up to Maine this past weekend to find our venue/start the wedding planning.
Well, let’s just say things did not get off to a good start.
Our flight left LGA a little bit late and was oversold so Fiance and I couldn’t sit together (no problem, it’s only and hour long flight).
1 1/2 hrs into the flight we still haven’t landed or heard any information about landing. We are then told that Portland is completely socked in with fog and we are circling hoping it clears. They say we have about 30-45 min of fuel for circling.
An hour and a half later, the pilot comes on and says we’ve exhausted our circling fuel and are being diverted to Manchester, New Husband and that we’ll be on the ground in 15 min.
30 min go by (with some pretty erratic flying) and the flight attendant comes on and says “We really have no plan”. Now I’m freaking out, I’m thinking we aren’t going to make it to Manchester, etc and I am NOT a nervous flyer.
Turns out she means they have no plan on how to get us from Manchester to Portland.
We land at Manchester at 12:30am (we were supposed to land in Portland at 9:40pm) and we are told there will be a bus picking us up at 1am to take us to Portland.
Fiance goes to talk to the rental car company to see if we can just do a one way rental (they discourage him from doing that) but the rental company promises the rental desk in Portland will stay open until we get there.
By 1:30 it’s clear that no bus has been arranged for and the airline is STILL searching for someone.
Well, I’ll just summarize the rest since this is getting long, bus finally arrives at 2:15am and we get to Portland at 3:40am. Rental place is closed and doesn’t re-open until 6am and by the time we find this out all taxis are gone.
We sleep in the airport for an hour or so, and finally get our car at 6am and head up the coast.
We were utterly exhausted, but we did end up finding (and booking) the perfect venue.
I’m hoping that since we had to deal with such a bad trip up, hopefully our guests will be spared.
Any of you have bad travel stories surrounding the wedding or planning?
