I’m going to cabo in March of next year and I’m mildly concerned about wearing My ring out of the country. Sure we’re staying at a 5 star resort that’s VERY nice so I feel like I’m being mildly silly about it. My Fiance acted like he was a little put off when I mentioned leaving it at home and said he likes seeing it on me AND likes the idea of other men seeing it as well so I don’t get hit on as much.
Now honestly, since I’ve gotten engaged I’ve been hit on countless times and I don’t think men really pay attention to this but if it’s important to my Fiance then ill wear it..I’m just nervous about the sand and water and losing it or it getting stolen.
Helppp lol opinions?

I had this conversation with my S/O’s good friend from HS and his new wife. The friend and the wife are both from Mexico originally although they live here (the US) now and they went to Mexico for their honeymoon. They told us to NOT wear rings or jewelry of any kind – especially if it is yellow gold. Don’t wear anything that conveys the idea of money or worth. You’re staying at a 5 star resort, but I’m assuming they don’t have a private airport so you will still have to travel somewhat through Mexico outside the resort. The friend and the wife told us that the crime is so high that people would cut your finger off to have the ring and that such events or other types of mugging are not worst case scenario stories, but pretty common….so yeah, I’d leave the ring at home. And hopefully your Fiance would be more concerned with your safety then staking his territory.

I’ve gone to Mexico three times and have always worn my rings. All the women at the resorts have them on. It would never even occur to me not to wear them.

@Laurenskii: When I go away I wear a fake ring. It’s the exact replica of my real ring but it is CZ and plated metal. I had a destiantion wedding and wore my real ring when we went there but normally I would have just worn my fake replica ring. Maybe thing about getting a cheaper less expensive ring to wear when you travel

Lol, if “humblebrag” ever makes it into the dictionary, I hope this post is used to define it.

@starla: well aren’t you pleasant and helpful!

@starla: um okay. By no means was I bragging but if you’d like to take it that way then awesome. Rude comment was unnecessary.
@sweetchiquita12: that’s a good option!
@carolinabelle: oh gawd no. Fingers getting cut off? Seriously?

@Laurenskii: it depends on where you are going. i have a home in the yucatan and travel to cancun and that coast all of the time with my rings (btw, they are 8ctw) and i have never had a problem.
if you are going to stay on a resort, you should be fine. if you plan on visiting the less desirable areas, no.
as for the beach, if your ring turns at all on your finger, don’t wear it on the beach or in the water. keep it in the hotel safe.
i have personally travelled through neary 50% of mexico by car and have never had a problem. i didn’t wear my ering b/c it’s big but i still wore my eternity band and it’s 4ctw alone.

@MrsTVLover: maybe if I just took it off at the airport in put it in my pocket then put it back on at the resort?

@Laurenskii: Mexico (the resort areas) have less crime then most major cities in the US. So if you wouldn’t wear your ring to Chicago, or LA, or NOLA then don’t take it to Mexico. If you would then wear it.
Tourist areas are full of….wait for it…..other tourists, who will be wearing their rings.

There are so many rumors about Mexico. Yes, I’ve known people held at gunpoint in Mexico. But I still go to the beach and feel perfectly safe – especially at a resort area. No one is going to cut off your finger for the gold unless you’re somewhere you shouldn’t be, but that’s true for the US. You’re not going to go to sketchy areas in the States, and it’s no different in Mexico.
Granted, idk how big your ring is. If it’s 10ct, then I’d be wary wearing it anywhere, but if it’s rather average, who cares. I’d be more worried about losing it in the water. So if it’s at all loose, leave it at home.
And if you’re paranoid, leave it at home. Problem solved.

@mypinkshoes: for the beach I’m more concerned about my micro pave. I really don’t think my ring is as fragile as I think it is but I’m still in the paranoid stage…

@Laurenskii: Personally, I wouldn’t. Mexico is not a first world country like the USA, and there are major issues with crime (check out your Country’s Govt Travel Advisories for more info / recommendations for travel abroad)
Mr TTR & I travel a lot, and when we go anywhere we figure might be “sketchy” I just leave my ERing locked up (in our Bank Safety Deposit Box)… or in our Hotel Room / Ship Cabin Safe (ie taking a cruise, but going ashore to a so-so country)
In which case I often opt to just wear my Plain WBand, or scale things back and wear by Sparkly WBand & my Plain WBand together (like this)
In reality you have to be aware that EXPENSIVE Jewellery can and does attract unnecessary attention to tourists (so why do it ?)
At any rate… you aren’t the first Bee to ask this exact same Question. Here is a link to a previous post (the UPDATE) and it links back to the OP.
Hope this helps,

Yeah I agree with PP.. I know quite a few people that wore a fake ring to their honeymoons/vacations

@Laurenskii: I’d suggest a stand-in ring. When I travel I wear a CZ ring from Macy’s – it was $12.- and change, on sale. People have actually admired it!!
