No advice on the weather, but in terms of pickpockets a money belt is a great idea. I was so much more relaxed on our vacation in Rome knowing that my fiance had part of our cash in his belt, and I had the rest in a slash-proof purse with locking zippers that I got from LL Bean. I didn’t notice any potential pick pockets, nor did I ever feel unsafe anywhere, but the peace of mind that they’d have to go through some serious and very noticeable effort to get our valuables was worth it.

I can’t speak for Barcelona but I just got home from a trip to Rome this past weekend! The weather was HOT and there wasn’t a lot of shade at a lot of the big sites. Definitely take sunscreen and a hat! I took mostly shorts/capris and tshirts/tanktops. I ended up wearing the tshirts and capris the most because some of the religious sites (the Vatican sites especially) require you to cover your shoulders and knees. Also, pack a few reusable water bottles – there are public fountains all through the city where you can fill up your water bottle instead of buying water all day long. 🙂

As for pickpockets-we didn’t have any issues. I wore a cross body purse and kept the pockets turned towards me and kept my hand on it if we were in large crowds or on the subway. Depending on the time of day, you’ll have to push your way on/off the subway trains so I would be most cautious there. And like most touristy places, there are annoying “sales people” pushing things at you at the big sites (like bottled water, shawls, umbrellas, etc). Don’t engage with them, just tell them “no” very firmly. They made me nervous as some would get so brazen as to push things into your hands or try to put a shawl around your shoulders. That felt like the most likely time to get pickpocketed to me.

Have a great honeymoon and enjoy yourselves! Take tons of pictures!

Weather was nice in Sept, shorts during the day is fine, but a light sweater for night if you tend to get cold.  My husband just keeps his wallet in his front pocket instead of back whenever we travel and its fine.  I just carry my Longchamp purse, and have never felt targeted.  Its not as bad as people make it out to be imo.

llevinso :  It’s a purse made with fabric that has metal woven in, so it can’t be slashed with a pocket knife or cut with scissors, which is apparently a common tactic– people can snip the strap off or cut into the bottom of the bag to steal what’s inside. I wish I could find the link to the one I bought, but  if I remember correctly the brand is Pac-Safe.

llevinso :  Yea, I mean, if you think about how deep mens front jean pockets are (I’m assuming he’ll be wearing jeans)… theres no way anyone is getting down tehre without him not noticing.  Plus if we’re in a super crowded, like shoulder to shoulder on a train or something… then we make sure I’m on the side of him where his wallet is, and I keep my purse between us too.  Other than that, when you’re just walking around… if someone is in your personal space close enough to pickpocket you, you’d notice.  And there’s no reason for anyone to be taht close, so as long as you are aware, you’re fine.

Barcelona has a pick pocket problem. My mum’s friend had her bag stolen when they were on holiday there. I’ve never been so can’t speak from personal experience but it’s always a warning.

I’ve been to Rome a couple of times and it’s pretty safe. Just don’t be an obvious tourist, in either city, and you’ll be fine. And obviously keep your wits about you, don’t carry everything in one place etc.

Rome in September could be hot, as could Barca, so I would pack layers.

I was pickpocketed in Barcelona – not much, they got about 10 euros out of my front shorts pocket.  And like your husband, I was born and raised in Chicago. I actually kept my phone/big bills in my bra, or in a cross body bag, and never had problems with those, but in a super crowded place, someone managed to grab a 10 euro note out of my pocket while I was checking out some stunning architecture.  I’d skip the backpack for valuables, unless you plan on wearing it  in front/making your husband walk behind you the whole time.

i honeymooned in Italy at the end of october.  we had perfect weather.  we flew into venice and worked our way south to florence, rome, and naples/capri.

in venice and florence, i needed a light jacket a night.  rome and south was shorts and t-shirt.

we didn’t have an issues with pickpockets.

I was there in September two years ago (both cities) and it was the equivalent of high 80s / low 90s Fahrenheit. Definitely wear light, loose clothing and stay hydrated!
