Your ring will be fine unless you are very unlucky, I’d happily wear mine.

llevinso :  I’m from London, been to Europe, as well as the Caribbean and Mexico, numerous times. The idea that ‘Europe’ is this big crazy scary place is just insane to me. It is no more or less safe than most other continents. Is petty theft and pick pocketing an issue? Yes. But I’m much more OK with that than, say, the rate of gun-related deaths in major cities in the US (which still wouldn’t make me think twice as the risk is SO small).

I guess I just feel like yeah, I might get my phone stolen from my bag while I’m not looking, NBG, insurance covers it. I cannot imagine being so paranoid I’d start buying slash-proof bags/wearing money belts etc, because the risk is still so low.

barbie86 :  Parts of Barcelona are off the scale though compared to virtually anywhere else in Europe, not for violent crime, but for bag-snatching and pickpocketing. Have you been? It’s not like London, it’s much more prevalent.

OP, I love the city and would live there in a heartbeat. My brother lived and worked there for 9 months and I’ve stayed there many times over the past 25 years. The petty crime is a nuisance but largely preventable. It’s worse around the Cuitat Vella (Barrio Gotico) and the Ramblas in particular. You don’t need to be scared, just vigilant.

If you are staying centrally, I really recommend have breakfast at one of the stalls in the Boqueria, officially called and signed the  Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria.

llevinso :  “Well the beginning of this thread everyone was telling me I was nuts for bringing a backpack and I needed a sturdy cross-body bag and not to wear my ring, so…as I said before, I felt much less paranoid about everything before I posted on here.”

You certainly did get a lot of conflicting responses here!  FWIW, it seems like it’s some of the responders that lean towards “alarmist”, not actually you.

If you really want to use a back pack then use a back pack.  I just got a new one today that I’d feel plenty comfortable wearing from a security standpoint.  I just don’t find them convenient, having to take it off & swing around front to get in & out of it.  Just a bigger hassle then simply slipping my hand into the purse at my side when compared to a crossbody.  That’s just me.

You probably wish you never started this thread by now lol

Take it all with a grain of salt.  Have fun on your trip!  I’m headed to Italy soon too 😊

Drizzle :  yup, several times, likewise Lisbon and Rome which are almost ‘up there’ when it comes to petty theft. I just don’t get the hysteria: like I said earlier in this thread, petty theft happens everywhere. It’s life. I could not imagine never wearing jewellery, for example, because of the risk.. Or wearing money belts everywhere.

OP is bring perfectly reasonable, but other posters aren’t. I guess I should just be glad I don’t have to live in such a state of paranoia lol
