They probably would offer more images for a premium.  How long is the coverage that you need?  30 edited photos  seems like an okay amount if you’re just talking an hour or so, but longer and I’d negotiate more.

It would be very difficult to put that many (I assume about 500-800) hi-res images on a disk.  Each image would be too big.  It’s not a problem unless you want to print them but even then you probably wont notice it unless you were printing large sized images.  If you want to be able to edit the images yourself (or print them large) insist on it.  But be prepared to pay for additional CDs, you could offer to by an external harddrive (about 1Tb) that your photographer could transfer the images on.

This sounds like it’s either  very basic package or perhaps the 30 images include extra retouching?  Do you select the 30 favorites?

Is this a protrait or event photographer?

Should have no problem fitting them on 1-2 DVD’s….usually they are downsized to 3000px on the long side. (8×10 printable).  Giving a client a 25 MP image is unnecessary.

@Over the Moon:   Yeah portrait vs events, he has more of a portrait mentality, which isn’t a bad thing because the 30 finished images you get will probably be perfect.  Event photographers tend to do color corrections only and give away the boat…all the images, high res, with minimal editing.  You just can’t spend that much time for image when doing hundreds of images.  Perhaps negotiate that the rest of the images are also high res (not websize), and a per image retouch charge if you want one or two in additional to the 30 finished perfect for print, etc.
