- Wedding: September 2013
so, I love my engagment ring. It’s a lovely (if I do say so 🙂 ) oval, set east west in a simple unplated white gold bezel, with an open low-set cathedral profile. We had it custom made because I was sooooo particular about wanting a very simple engagement ring that was a little unique, with clean lines, but not too modern. I’ve been wearing it for over a year and I still stare at it daily and it makes me smile every time!
well, with the wedding coming up in September it’s wedding band time… I have ALWAYS thought I’d just get a simple, plain, white gold band, slightly wider than my e-ring shank (which is 2.5 mm). We went to our jeweler last weekend, I tried on lots of diamond bands, thought they were all a little too fussy for me, and the thinner ones looked silly without my e-ring on my big fingers, while the thicker ones just seemed like too MUCH next to my e-ring and kind of overshadowed my diamond… I tried a 3.5 mm YG band on my pinky that was too small to fit on my ring finger, decided it was a very close match to the shank of my e-ring (same depth and very close to the same dome shape – to get it EXACT it would have to be custom and would cost nearly 2k, which I don’t think is worth it for a plain band…), bought it in unplated WG.
well, my ring came in today, and I’m kinda on the fence now… it’s OK, I’ve been wearing it to see if it grows on me more, but I just kind of feel like it makes my finger look thicker (size 9 folks, we don’t need it to look any bigger!), throws off the balance of my e-ring, and is kinda masculine… It is fully returnable within 30 days, even if I scratch it all up wearing it, so now I’m re-thinking what I thought I wanted. I tried on some other rings and took pictures (crummy cell phone pics, but still). I’m wondering what you guys think.
FYI, any band I get (provided I get a WG band and not YG) would be unplated WG, not rhodium-plated, so it would match my e-ring (love the creaminess of unplated WG, know rhodium wouldn’t last long with how active I am (ie how much I scratch up my ring…), and know I wouldn’t keep up with re-plating all the time. Plus, I don’t want to cover up something that I already think is beautiful!)
First, the band I already bought. Like I mentioned, 3.5 mm plain unplated WG band. Not the sparkly spot lighting of the jewelry store like the other pics, just my living room… In this picture the rings don’t look the same color, but in person they do. It’s also freezing cold here today (and in my house too, thanks to my fiance being a thermostat control-freak… 😉 ) so my finger is a little smaller than usual and the rings are sitting a little sideways, so it looks like the band is much thicker than the e-ring if you look at the pinky side of my finger, but really they’re exactly the same thickness (not width though, the band is 1 mm wider) (we got the callipers out in the store)
Next, the same band, but 4 mm wide (and in rodium plated WG and 1 size too big in this picture, since it’s the store sample)
next, 2 thin bands (one on each side), each with 7 diamonds, set in oblong twisting bezels with milgraining. Both bands would be unplated WG (and would fit me, obviously. These were nearly too small for my pinky…)
I think this picture shows the detail better. I think I could wear them together without the e-ring… Hard to know how they will look on my bigger ring finger though…
And, for fun, a 1.5 ct 7 stone band. Pretty, but maybe too blingy (?) I am a pretty non-blingy person, though I do like nice things. I just don’t want to overshadow my e-ring diamond, because I think it is so pretty and unique on it’s own. Maybe this would be better as a RHR later on. Plus, it’s pricey. We didn’t exactly set a budget (it’s something I’ll wear every day for my whole life, afterall, so I should love it), but I am a practical and pragmatic person…
I was thinking, maybe I’d like 2 thin (1.5 mm?) yellow gold bands on either side of my e-ring? Or maybe something like this (if I can find something like this). I want him to be able to engrave it though…(but I suppose he could engrave something in my e-ring instead):
Thanks for sticking with me through this whole post! What do you guys think?
