Hi! This is actually my first post even though I’ve been browsing the site for months. Sorry that it’s kind of long. I really needed to vent.
My fiance and I regularly stop into Kay Jewlers to look at wedding bands. Most of the time we tell the sales person that we don’t need any help because we just like we look. Sometimes we do talk to someone. We decided since our wedding is only four and a half months away we should start to be a bit more serious about it. We stopped in yesterday and the lady that helpped us asked to see my ring and showed me the enhancer that I guess was designed to go with it. It was cute, but it was only 1/6 carat and not what I was looking for. I told her that it was very thin and I’m a fan of the thicker bands and was considering an aniversary band. She insisted that no other band would look right. I was open to finding similar enhancers, but I honestly want a 1/2 carat or 1 carat band. My engagement ring is 1/2 carat. She suggested that I just buy two of the enahncer. Ok… I understand it will be thicker, but the diamond in the ring were hardly distinguishable. I kept saying that I’d rather have one that I liked because if I settle I’ll be back for a replacement.
I had already felt that guilt once. My original engagament ring was a three stone ring. I really didn’t want that style, but I felt terrible telling my fiance that. I kept the ring for about a week until I confessed. Thankfully he didn’t mind half as much as I thought he would and we replaced it that day.
I told the woman that we were looking to spend for our rings combined about $3,000, maybe 3,500-4,000 if we don’t have any surprises with our other wedding expenses.
Everytime I tried to explain myself or turned down something she glared at my fiance like I was a total (can I curse?!) bridezilla. Why does she care?
I’d love something that matched, but I don’t think I’ll find something within a 1/2 carat or 1 carat (or bigger 😉 ) that isn’t a brand. (They tend to be twice the price of a regular ring) I finally told the lady that I just don’t care. I want somehting that can be woren without my engagement ring if I decide I want to leave my engagament ring off. The 1/6 enahncer was soooo thin.. It’d make a great anniversary I can’t find a photo of it, but if you look at how my ring has two split parts leading up to the diamond, it was one of those parts.
This is my ring. (Yes, I have the worlds fattest fingers) 🙂
Here is one that I found in the store. It’s 3/4 carat.
I found these others online. Has anyone ever bought one off of their site? It’s important that I get the insurance plan. I break everything so I’m bound to lose a diamond.
Am I being rediculous? Share your photos/advice 🙂

If you don’t want the enhancer that “goes” with your ring, you are not being ridiculous! You get to choose your ring, not the saleslady. Don’t let her talk you into something you don’t want.

You and your Fiance should not have to deal with someone so intent on convincing you of what you want! Is there any way you could ask for someone else to help you the next time you shop there? I really like the 3/4 ct that you chose. And I have NO advice for ordering on-line. I would think that if it arrived and you didn’t like it, you could return it.

Yeah, this person doesn’t seem to understand customer service. You might even have better luck checking out a different business – maybe someplace independent and locally-owned would do a better job than a chain?

Try going to a custom jeweler. You will be amazed at the service & attention to your specifications. Fiance had my ERing made and then we picked the wedding bands together. I had a lovely time at the shop and Mr. Arendsen walked me through the entire process he uses to make a custom wedding band. It was really interesting and I felt like a part of the process instead of just picking out a ring. I think you’ll be very pleased.
I would highly recommend going that route. You’ll get exactly what you want!

First, beautiful ring!! Another bee has that style and I love it 🙂 Second, the last time a saleswoman told me what I wanted I left and never went back. Kay’s and the like are notorious for poor customer service, I own a bunch of stuff from them and it’s usually a headache. For your ring, if you want a flat band (which I absolutely agree with, I wanted the same thing) I would suggest looking for a diamond band with a milgrain edge. I can’t post links from my phone, but I know I’ve seen them at Blue Nile and I know bees who have purchased from there happily. Do a google search for diamond and milgrain and you’ll see what I mean. I think it would look fabulous! And I wouldn’t get hung up on carat weight, I understand wanting more as I did too but you might be pleasantly surprised 🙂

@headoverhighheels: Listen the Kay’s where I go .. The sales people can be pushy as honestly in myexperience they have terrible customer service. Those bands would look nice and I honestly prefer thicker bands also. Everyone always tries to convince me that a 2mm band will match my ring best and it’s just not happening . That’s too thin for me. I recently ordered a ring online from Kay’s.com and they had some special for free shipping so I went for it. I returned it in the store and didn’t have to pay a dime. They were having sales yesterday for the holiday and free shipping so I think you should try it out!

You are not ridiculous for not wanting the badn the lady at Kay’s was pushing on you. If you don’t like it, you don’t like it and there is nothing wrong with that.
That said, while the rings you posted are GORGEOUS, I’m not sure about how they would look next to your ring. I feel like it would probably be a bit much.
Try looking at places other than Kay’s. Every jewelery store around will have wedding band options and your e-ring and wedding band(s) don’t have to be from the same place. Maybe look at putting a band on each side of your e-ring if you want a little more bling.
I have a channel set wedding band that matches the band on my e-ring and I love it. Have you looked at any channel set bands?
ETA: By The Way, you don’t have the world’s fattest fingers! 😉

I’m so glad that everyone feels the same way I do. We are trying to go with Kay’s so that some of the costs can be put on to my fiances credit card that he has with the company.
When did you guys order your rings? I try to ignore the sales ladies’ suggestions because they’ve been trying to get me to order ASAP.
Do independent stores offer insurance plans to replace diamonds and such as long as you get the jewlery inspected every six months or something? That’s one thing that actually comforts me about Kay’s. I have some friends that have replaced their diamonds multiple times over a year or twos time.

Oh! and Mrs.KMM I’m dying over your ring! I’ve looked at some channel set bands and I do like them! I like everything…… except pushy sales ladies! 🙂

We went through Kay and I did not go with their “suggestions.” One of my friends used Kay as well and bought two of the same band to put on both sides. I would look online or at another Kay, sometimes they have a completely different selection.
I have noticed the sales people can be pretty pushy. Go with what you love not what they think.

@MrsElopement Your ring looks to unique to be from Kay’s. I love it 🙂

No, you’re completely in the right. It sounds like she just wanted to make the sale and get you out. Honestly, who gives a you know what about what she thinks? It’s your ring. I would have complained to the manager and gotten a new sales rep.

I have bought from Kay before – both in store and online – and I am not impressed. I think you could definitely get a 1 carat band in your price range. I got my platinum 5-stone 1 carat wedding band for $800 on ebay.

@Cbran2323: I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the next time we go in it’s someone different 🙂
@lilsweetie: It’s beautiful! I’d be afraid that someone would send me something fake or stolen though. I’m checking anyway 🙂
