Hopefully the customer service can help you resolve it quick. Bait and switch isn’t nice, even if it wasn’t intended. This is partially why I refused to look at halo rings…finding a matching band that wouldn’t cause a huge gap seems like a problem.

Since your sales associate said it would be fine, I’d definitely keep talking to their corporate customer service about it. You might still have to pay but I’d ask nicely and say pretty please and explain your frustrations on the chance they knock the price down, especially since you were told twice it was covered under warranty.

I’m thinking the sales associate didn’t realize that extra metal would need to be added to make it fit, thus why they called and told you you owed money. That’s their fault though because their rep shouldnt tell you something if it isn’t true. Hopefully, you can get all of this worked out!
