Our cake was present at the start of the reception, Darling Husband and I did our cake cutting as soon as we made our grand entrance, and then once dinner started they took it out of the room to prepare it for serving to the guests later.

At other weddings I’ve seen the cake stay on display for all of dinner, after which the bride and groom cut their slice and the rest is taken away to be cut for the guests. Keep in mind though that wedding cakes, unless you’re doing a small tiered cake plus sheet cakes, have internal structural elements that need to be worked around, and therefore take a lot of time to deconstruct and cut for serving.

oh this is great information to know. I was planning to have mine on display for most of the night until we cut it, then they cut and serve with our sweet table.

For mine it was out all night as the centerpiece of one of our rooms.  We did the cake cutting after dinner and after the speeches.  As soon as we did our job the restaurant did theirs and cut slices for everyone and had it out in the middle and on the ice cream buffet we had for dessert.
