@fireNice:  I had to provide my cake topper.  My venue had a gorgeous silver cake stand; however, my cake was square, and the stand was round. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize that I would not have a cake stand because of that.

Our cake place said we could either buy it from them or provide our own.  I think it depends on the place you use – I’m sure it varies.

We ordered cupcakes. They provided us with the stand, and we have fresh flowers that we are supplying to decorate around the stand.

Our baker made sugar paste cranes for our toppers.  I’m sure we would have had the option to bring our own if we wanted to.

We would have to provide the topper (we’re just using flowers), but the cake stand is included in the price of the cake.  We will return it within 3 days of the wedding.  They even had two or three options for us to pick from.

EDIT: we could have provided our own cake stand, but we liked theirs

I am providing my own topper, and silk flowers and brooches, only because the cake designer wanted to mimic my card box and the supplies i used for it.

the baker does rent pillars and stands, we havent decided what we are going to do with that yet.
