I used to work in a bakery that did this, It is just regular satin ribbon secured with royal icing (though you can secure it with butter cream too if you are careful)

Make sure your icing or fondant is dry when you put it on, nothing sticky or it will blead and look darker in spots

yup, that’s exactly what our baker told us. We’re having buttercream frosting, and she said to go buy a ribon at a craft store in any color we want, just (1) not too thin (or frosting will seep through) and (2) definitely not too dark (because when it gets wet/damp it gets darker, and many bright/vibrant colors turn almost black). That’s all we were told, though I’d love to hear how it works out in real life!

Yes it is regular ribbon from any local craft store.

I’ve seen a ton of pictures online of wedding cakes with light colored ribbons and there isn’t any leakage or discoloration.

That was the one think our baker said, don’t exactly match the color you want, go like a shade lighter because putting it on the cake gets it wet and it will be darker.

Does anyone know if you can do this with whipped cream frosting?

@39bride, there is no reason why it shouldn’t work with whipped cream frosting.

For our cake below, I bought all the ribbon at either Michaels or Walmart (Walmart has the best prices!). I couldn’t figure out what sizze was best so I took a few different sizes and told the bakery to use their judgment. I had 3 different sizes total and loved the final result.

@knitterbear: Thanks! The LOVE paperweight was supposed to be the cake topper after the bakery assured me they would put a plate on the top of the cake under the icing. Yeah… they didn’t and my florist said the paperweight started to fall through! She slapped some roses on top and turned out great!
