I’m sure this topic has been done before but I’m too lazy too look for them looking for more recent info! 🙂 I’m talking with a lady who makes cakes as kind of a side job and the quote I got was $4.50/serving for fondant and $3.50/serving for buttercream. Does that seem reasonable?
We’re getting two small tiers, a 10-inch and a 6-inch and doing cupcakes for guests.

I think that is a pretty average, if not below average cost – even at $4.50

I would say that’s below average, at least compared to the rates where I live. I think for ours, it was around $5/slice for buttercream and $8/slice for fondant. But that was including the decorative flowers and stuff… plus it would have cost an extra $1.50/slice if we wanted the buttercream to be a color other than off-white.

Depending upon what her cakes taste like and look like, that seems very reasonable to me. I had an amazing-looking and extremely delicious cake — with buttercreme frosting — and the cost of my cake was $4-$5 per slice, depending upon the fillings I had in each layer.

Mine starts at $3.85 for undecorated cake with simple filling, then goes up from there with each add-on (fondant, complicated design, monogram, gourmet fillings, etc). We’re at about $4.85/slice but I’m getting a relatively fuss-free cake.

I would definitely say that is on the low end. My cake is about $3.70/slice, but I am getting a fake cake made with sheet cakes in the back.

Seems about right, though be prepared to spend more depending on what type of decorations you want. Ours ended up being almost $9 per slice by the time it was all said and done. Thankfully we only had 70 guests or else I may have had to sell a kidney!

Phew! These responses made me feel much better! I was really tempted to not tell this lady it was a wedding cake because I’m sure it bumps the price up! I think she would have figured it out from the design though haha.
She also said we could pretty much do whatever design we wanted and it wouldn’t bump up the price unless it was SUPER intricate. I’m wanting to do the quilted fondant with little pearls at the criss-crosses with brown ribbon around the bases. To me that seems pretty simple so hopefully it won’t drive the price up!

That’s a very decentprice for a bakery cake. Mine was $300 flat for a cake that was said to be 120 slices for most available cake/filling combo and more would be added for a super intricate design (ie she’d done ones completely piped with scrollwork). Most ideas I brought to our initial consult had no increase though. My lady was a side job out of her home as well.
