I think before you worry about decorations and small details you should book your venue because that could influence all of those details.

Also you could use more subdued versions of those colors with a lot of neutrals mixed in if you want a more subtle sophisticated look.

Our wedding is in the fall as well and I too, didnt want the usual fall colors of burnt orange, red etc. I doing some deep wines, red, plums,greens, gold, dusty rose and seafoam! They actually all go beautifully together and of course some are just accent colors! I agree that you should find a venue first so these things can just fall into place afterwards!
