You can’t go wrong with jazz for a cocktail hour.  A string quartet would not set the mood you want for a social hour.  Think Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble, Etta Kitt, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, etc.

DGN85:  Does your DJ not play during those times? In any case, for our cocktails and dinner we went with a mix of Vitamin String Quartet, the Beatles, Dave Matthews Band, Jack Johnson, Sara Bareilles, Bob Marley, Jason Mraz, Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, Coldplay, Michael Buble, Nora Jones, etc. Wanted to keep it chill but mostly modern. Played some older stuff like Stand by Me by Ben E King and Wonderful World by Sam Cooke.
