The thing I have disagreed the most with my family about is not my guest list, or the venue, or the menu, or the bridal party, or any of the more normal-sounding things you would argue with your family about. No. It’s been my nails. NAILS. It sounds ridiculous. But here is my dilemma bees.
In “normal life” (aka, not related to wedding life) I like interesting colors on my nails. Bright blue, dark purple, neon orange, mint green. In fact, I chose the color of my bridesmaids’ dresses from my favorite minty green nail polish. I litereally searched high and low for dresses that were the same color as that nail polish. I think I maybe have had a French manicure like, three times in my life, and the last one was probably 5 if not more years ago. And because I’m pretty fair skinned with pinkish undertones (is that the right word?) I really feel like pink looks weird on my fingers, and especially light pink just blends in and makes my fingers look gross.
Before I even met Mr. BlueEyes I said that I thought it would be a really cool idea for my nails to match my bridesmaids dresses. I don’t think anyone took me seriously back then. But I really do think that would be awesome. My first choice was to have my nails painted in a normal way in that mint green that I tried so desperately to match.Mint Sorbet by Sally Hansen
Well, people pretty much made me feel like I had said I was going to wear an alien costume instead of a wedding dress. And not just my mom and other ladies not from my generation. My friends too, including my Maid/Matron of Honor. Only one Bridesmaid or Best Man thought it was awesome. So, I started to search for alternatives, compromises.
My first idea was a semi-French. Like the picture below, but white instead of blue, and my awesome green instead of black.
Well, Maid/Matron of Honor told me it would look like I had scum under my nails. Gee, thanks.
Then, I saw this picture on Pintrest, and while it totally deviates from my original green desire, I thought it would still be neat and interesting, and would work because I have a gorgeous lace dress!
Well, I was told that this looks extremely childish and that I am getting married and I am a grown woman. Again, gee thanks.
I’ve also considered ombre nails, with my nails being mostly white, and then a touch of green at either the tips or at the base. I’m not exactly sure how I’d do this, but I googled it and it doesn’t seem TOO difficult.
Still, I feel like no one will be happy unless I have nude or pink or a boring French mani. There’s nothing wrong with any of those, but I really don’t understand why if I don’t EVER do anything like that in non-wedding life, why I have to suddenly become a different style of person on my wedding day. And besides, who EVER notices the bride’s nails so much that she can’t do green nails or whatever the heck she wants?
Bees, I really don’t understand why this of all things is such a big deal to my family and friends. Any insight? And also, what would you do? Any suggestions on which one of these ideas, or others, would be the best compromise?
