I went for my first wedding dress alterations today and am a little nervous. I have bought as US size 8 Maggie Sottero Lizette Royal sample, but I am a UK size 8/10. I knew the dress would need taking in and I wasn’t concerned about this. However, today’s fitting was quite full-on. I had a seamstress on each side of me with loads of pins, taking in both sides of the bodice on my dress. I was a bit worried I might get pricked with a pin and it was very hard to know where to put my arms, so I just tired to keep calm and keep a smile on my face.
Since leaving the shop it has occurred to me that they had pinned the bodice in really quite a lot on each side, my arms were in such an odd position that I’m not sure the size they made it would fit usually. I would estimate about 1 1/2 inches, but that was doubled up fabric, so it could end up being 6 inches overall! The bodice is a lace back and they undid the laces so as to make the pinning easier, but might the dress not end up being far too small, with the laces stretched right across my back? Surely I would have been aware of the dress being more than a size too big.
Has anyone else had a dress altered and found that it was ulitmately too small? Is there anything that can be done if this happens? Do you think taking it in this much might ruin the detail on the bodice?
I think I’m just over excited and need talking down. They shoudl know what they’re doing right? I will be able to breathe in my wedding dress?
