Wedding Dress Frustrations

In my case it’s not my mum but my sister who has always been the pretty and stylish one of us. She lives too far away to be included in dress shopping, so I sent her pictures of dresses I liked and she hated all of them and also our ideas for the party and the colours etc. Because of her I went to an actual bridal store and picked a dress that wasn’t what I had originally wanted (long flowing Grecian-inspired instead of 50s tea length) but that I do like very much. I had anticipated approval from her side but towards me she was luke-warm at best and all she said to my mother was “oh well, we’ve always had different taste in clothing”. She also didn’t even say anything nice about my ring.

My solution: after stressing out about it and telling my H2B about it, I’ve just stopped telling her anything about the wedding preparations. She’s right: we have different taste in clothing (and people) and she’s never been particularly good at advising me in style matters (because she’s very small and slim while I’m tallish and plus size; she likes 1920s and 60s stuff which flatter her but make me look shapeless).

So instead of letting her freak me out about all the choices I’m making about the wedding that only really concern my H2B and me, she just doesn’t get a say. I strongly recommend you do the same. Planning a wedding is exhausting enough, there’s no reason to add negativity to it. It’s fine to have people who are honest but they just shouldn’t nitpick.

She can still be part of other planning stuff that she maybe doesn’t have such strong feelings about.

Also: I am sure you picked the right dress. A girl know when she’s looking fine. So stand your ground and eff negativity.

I looked at hundreds of gowns online before I went shopping with my mom, step mom and future mother in law. When I tried on dresses there were a few that everyone absolutely LOVED, but that I HATED. When I tried on the dress I had fallen in love with online a month or so before, the reaction from everyone was a little flat. But I knew that my reaction was the only one that mattered, and I had never felt more beautiful or special than I did in that dress! I ordered it that same day 🙂

Choose something you love, bee! This is your day, not your mom’s!
