I’m having a bit of a dilemma. I’m getting married next year with a brief private civil ceremony and a larger reception at a banquet hall the next day. I am Chinese American and traditionally there’s at least one dress change – usually a red dress.
There are two options I’m weighing for the red dress. Should I wear a red modern evening gown-type dress or should I go traditional? FYI I will not be wearing a qi Pao because I 100% know it won’t look good on me. If my FH had his way, I’d be going full empress mode.
Example of the modern dress:
For reference this is my wedding dress:

I like how the modern red dress has elements of your wedding gown in it. You can always spice it up with some gold accessories!
I voted modern ❤️

To clarify, I have not picked the red dress yet, the photos are just examples 😅 but both need to be A-line with sleeves.

I think it would be fun to incorporate the red tradition, but why not do it in a modern way!

Have you tried on a traditional red dress before? They (especially the more expensive, higher quality ones with more stitchings) are quite stiff and uncomfortable and I couldn’t wait to get out of it. If you wanted to honour your heritage, however, go for the traditional dress. You only get to wear that once.

I voted fck it. Hehe. It’s one time event, get the most out of it if you want to.

Hi, where do you buy these traditional dresses from? I’m Chinese too, getting married next year and I’m thinking of wearing a traditional dress for a portion of the wedding.
Also, do you know how much a good quality one would cost?

Both dresses look great. Is there a way to find a dress that does both and fit within your budget?

I found these on Taobao with the help of Google translate. I plan on ordering via Superbuy/another 3rd party agent.
If you go down the Taobao route, it ranges from $30-150 USD + ~$20 shipping based on weight. There’s also Etsy sellers and East Meets Dress (bespoke dresses) – those range from $200 – $600. I can’t speak on quality for any of these options. I do have a suspicion that lots (not all) of Chinese dresses and accessories on Etsy are wholesale unless you’re going custom.
Thankfully both fit within my budget. I am not willing not go over $100 for these.
I didn’t think of that. Thanks for pointing that out! I’ll try on a few before I purchase.
