I’m going to start my wedding dress shopping this month and I think I’m going to start with either David’s Bridal or Alfred Angelo and I wanted to know opinions/experiences with these stores. Im plus size and wanting to stay well under 1,000…..thoughts?

I think David’s Bridal would definitely be able to find you options in your price range, especially if you shop during one of their sales. I don’t know as much about Alfred Angelo. I will say that, in my experience, David’s Bridal doesn’t really provide an amazing experience. Their model is definitely geared towards putting the most brides in the most dresses, rather than providing each bride with a really special experience.

Yeah, I see a lot of negative reviews online for customer service and client treatment at David’s Bridal…

I went to David’s Bridal before I found my $1000 dress at a small bridal shop. I bought a Stella York dress for $900.
At David’s I wasn’t happy I had to share my consultant. I only got to try on about 4 dresses in my time allotment mainly because the consultant wasn’t around to get me in and out of dresses. I think only one dress was what I think flattered my figure. They also had me wear a slip with extra poof on it which I think made me even wider. Not the look I was going for…the girl told me I had to wear the slip. I had undergarments on–shapewear. David’s has very inexpensive dresses. I thought I found my dress, then realized after looking at photos of the one I bought at a different store and the one I liked at David’s, the David’s dress really didn’t flatter my shape…it just hung on me
I thought I should check a local shop before buying my dress. I wanted to try on some Maggie dresses after looking at them here. I found a local shop said they could fit me, I am a street size 16 or so…large hips. Bridal was 20 or 22 at Davids. I went and they could, their dresses were made a bit better and found some that flattered me. I chose my dress there. The got me in a size 18 only because my hips…
Have three co-workers, two that are plus size, that went to Alfred Angelo and were very happy! They suggested I go there, but it is over an hour and a half to two hours away. The third co-worker went with her soon to be daughter-in-law for a dress. She wasn’t plus size but in looking at dresses my co-worker did notice extended sizes in nice designs.

I will be in the minority but I really hated Davids! The cut and fabric is cheap and not worth the price. Alfred Angelo is closer to price to value. Both had great consultants. Tried boutiques but could not justify the price.

I called ahead, worried about the same thing. I was scared there’d be no sample dresses in my size, and the last time I had to get a Bridesmaid or Best Man dress there, I was put in an 18. No worries. Even in the smallish city of Corpus Christi, Texas, they had plenty for me to try on, and even told me that I now fit better in an 16 than the 18 🙂
I printed out the web pages of dresses I wanted to try, and even if they didn’t ahve the EXACT dress, they found me something close. My dress was on sale, and I opted for no train, bringing the price down, and it was about $450 (no alterations have been done, yet, was told to wait for March). My buget for the dress iteself was $500, so I was happy. My sales consultant was awesome, and made me feel less awkward having to ahve help with everything from the strapless long bra I “borrowed” to each dress they had. She put me in the standard petticoat to start, but after I explained it was WAY too hot, and I’d be on the beach and did not want to be sweating, we left it on the dressing room floor.
I had been scared to go, as previously the David’s people up front had not been the best the time I went for my Bridesmaid or Best Man dress, but this girl was awesome. We took a photo with her, and I made sure to give her a good review on Yelp, which her boss saw (she told me when I came back to pick up my dress).
Here’s the thing – try them. If they are rude, tell them, and leave. If they are nice, you have a good chance to stay under budget 🙂

These are all super helpful comments, thanks guys! 🙂 I’ve made an appointment with Alfred Angelo this month bc when comparing the Alfred Angelo near me and the David’s Bridal near me, the Alfred Angelo had way better reviews so I’m starting there…super excited…I hope it’s a positive experience and that I find something in my price range for my plus size figure!!
