I just got engaged a little over a month ago, and my wedding is not going to be until January, 2015. I have been getting antsy to go dress shopping and I already have a mountain of magazine and printed pictures of dresses that I like. I would like to start dress shopping, but tI just don’t know if it is appropriate? Is it ok to walk into a dress shop and let the consultant know that I am not planning to make a purchase? I wouldhate to be rude, but I am just really excited and I want to find out what styles look good on me.
Also, I will be going on a family trip to New York City next summer. My mom, an avid Say Yes to the Dress fan, suggested that I go with her to Kleinfelds to buy a dress there. Is a year and a half to oearly to buy a dress? I have a fairly classic style, but do you think that even the ‘classics’ can change that much in a year and a half?
Thank you to anyone who responds!

I think it is okay to go to a store and let the sales people know that you are just looking at this point. I can see why you’d want to get an idea of what style looks good on you. I’d advise that you hold out on purchasing in case your taste changes in a year…you never know what dresses you may find in a year or so.

I don’t think it would be rude to shop without planning to buy… but I wouldn’t shop that early, from when I first got engaged to when I went dress shopping 3 months later (at 9 months out from the wedding) my vision of what I wanted changed.
Do you have a venue and basic style/theme picked out? That will also effect your dress vision.
IMO nothing bad will happen if you put it off, sure you’ll be anxious but you won’t end up with a dress that a year later you don’t like.
And another 2 cents about dress shopping: If you’re on a budget, buy used. Also, Kleinfelds sells my dress… for like $1500 from what I’ve heard, I got it locally for $1200.
