yes it’s 100% true. You might even want to order 2 sizes up (so I hear)… My first dress appointment is this Friday, yippy 🙂

Wedding dress sizes are totally different from regular clothes, and they are different from designer to designer. Best to find a dress you like and then ask around about sizing for that particular design house.

Mine is a Maggie Sottero and it is about 4 sizes larger than I normally wear.

It’s really, really hard to deal with having to order the dress in such a different size.

Yes, wedding dress sizes are very different from the sizing we usually see. However, instead of ordering up a size or two, I would look at the size chart for the dress designer, and order so it will fit your largest measurement (i.e. mine will be the right size for my hips, but probably too big in the waist and bust) and then you can get alterations from there. Much easier than trying to work with a dress that’s too small!

It’s SO different.  I wear a size 4 (US) in street clothes, and ordered a 12 (UK – so like 8 US) a  in my wedding dress based on their sizing char.t

@TankGirl:  yuuuuppppp.

I’m a total pear shape, aka huge ass hips thighs, and my dress is ordered to fit my hips.  The dress I ordered will be 14 inches too large in the bust and waist.  Hellooooo alterations.

Yep. My closet is full of size 10 dresses and my wedding dress is a size 16. It’s too big around my waist and it’s a ball gown so hips aren’t an issue. I’m just a little “busty” (as the saleslady pointed out). If I had gotten a corset back on my dress, I would have been able to go down at least a size.

I’ve heard this is true for many people. However, for me it wasnt the case –i’m a street size 2 and that’s what my dress (Vera Wang) was ordered in. I agree with the above posters that the best thing to do is to check the designer’s sizing chart and order from your biggest measurement.

Mine is a Mikaella, and I wear a 14-16.  They measured me and ordered a 16.  I’m kind of nervous, actually.

I am a 0 or 2 and ordered a 8 (I believe, the owner wouldn’t tell me because she didn’t want me to freak out and knew alterations were included). Get measured, then order.

I’m normally a size 4-6, and my dress was a size 8!  It also depends on designer of dress though so take that into consideration!

You need to find the sizing chart and have yourself measured by a professional. Many seamstresses and most bridal shops will measure you for free. Do NOT order just based on dress size number, even at a size up. I’m a street size 12 and had to order an 18.

Yep, it’s true! I wear a 0 in street clothes and my dress is a 4. The salon orders to fit your largest measurement, as a previous poster pointed out, and then takes everything else in. I would recommend at least trying on a dress by the designer you like to get and idea of how they run size wise. It seems Vera Wang runs more true to size than other designers. My dress is a Maggie Sottero. Good luck!
