Take it to the dry cleaners. It needs professional freshening up.

That musty smell is from dampness and bacterial overgrowth — gross! I’d rather pay a bit $ and not smell like an old, musty towel on the big day.

somedaymrsj :  Well, I was going to suggest a few ideas on how to possibly remove the smell, BUT

lifeisbeeutiful :  makes a really good point. So I second her suggestion to have it cleaned professionally. Also, would you care to post a photo?

Dry cleaning.  If it makes you feel better about paying for dry cleaning, I also bought a sample dress with tags.  On the recommendation of my seamstress, I got the dress dry cleaned.  It didn’t look like it needed to be dry cleaned.  However, once I’d gotten the dry cleaning done, the dress looked so much nicer.  It got much fluffier and filmier.  It was worth the cost, plus it will get rid of the smell in your case!

Whether you need professional cleaning or not is really up to you… if the dress truly is clean but has a weird smell, as is true even for brand new gowns from the manufacturer (fishy smells from chemicals!!!) you can take it out of the bag, hang it out in the open in a spare bedroom and spray it with some fabric freshener or a room scent spray. Don’t spray the fabric directly but spray the air in the room and leave the dress for a while to air out. You can try that first before taking it to the cleaners!

“Funny” story… I bought my dress from a sample sale. It sad in my old bedroom in my mom’s house and I found out that my mom brought it to the cleaners behind my back to get it cleaned. I found this out by going into my old room with my fiance and the dress was in the closet, but the curtain was open and the garmet bag was open. Needless to say I was LIVID.

Anyway, go to the cleaners.
