I have not yet looked for a dress for our May 7, 2011 wedding and I am getting scared of the ordering/altering/bridal portraits timeline. I have been putting it off in hopes of losing weight and also since I am afraid it will be torture.
Can you please let me know how long it took you all to get your dress?

most shops will tell you 4-6 months. i almost bought a casablanca that, if you paid for rush delivery (not too much), would come in 3 months. or you can try for a sample and keep putting it off.
but really, don’t let your weight stop you. you’ll look gorgeous no matter what.

I just ordered my dress and it is not coming in until June. However, I’m pretty sure they didn’t put it into production immediately upon order and if I had a wedding date sooner, it would come in sooner.
I would highly recommend NOT waiting until you lose weight- find something that flatters you now and if you happen to lose weight, it will be a bonus!
If dress shopping isn’t your thing (since you’re afraid it will be “torture”), do some research before you try on dresses- for example, do you like lace or beading? Preference on fabrics? Try not to pick a style until you see how they look on you. Keep an open mind, surround yourself with positive shoppers and it will be fun!!

@kitzy – Thank you – that is very sweet of you to say. It sounds like I better get on it and get it ordered in the next month…

My Pronovias took 4.5 months

I looked for about 5 months. I purchased my dress as a sample gown, so I did not need to wait for it to be ordered, made, and shipped. It also does not need any alterations (asside from a possible hemming).
If you are not too picky, you can buy a sample dress for a decent price. If you are picky, I would jump on this task!

Mine’s going to take 4 months. I’d get on the case asap because you need to take into account Xmas holiday break, Chinese New Year and the alterations

@PinkPinstripes:Thank you for the suggestions! I will try to stay positive and only take positive shoppers with me. 🙂
@aribari:Yikes! I hope it doesn’t take that long… that is all I have between now and the wedding… so there would be no time for alterations or bridal portraits! Thanks for the info – you have officially motivated me!
@BlueChampagne:I do not thnk I am too picky… but who knows. It would be great to be able to purchase something off the rack!

@CatyLady:Thank you – plan on going this weekend. I also had thought of the Chinese New Year as a possible hurdle. Thank you for the reminder!
